Republicans lost far more ground than expected, but the Democratic gains won't change tariffs on Canada. Here's what actually happened and why many pundits, including me, got it wrong.
Well now that Trump is weakened I’m sure master negotiator Carney will amaze us all with concessions he will be able to get. Cause isn’t that what the CDN media has been telling us? Wait for more Democrats and we will be fine? /sarc
Another blog I have been following for years and his computer forecast this loss, says the Dems are more protectionist than the GOP so we shouldn’t expect any respite.
That is actually quite true. Both Obama and Biden were very protectionist and they both introduced Buy America policies for government procurement to bolster American jobs. In both cases Trudeau and Freeland went down to Washington hat in hand to beg for an exemption for Canada because, you know, we are good old Canada, your friendly neighbour with the longest undefended border in the world - why we are family - like Cousins. Both Presidents did give an exemption on some goods but they both mentioned Dairy Supply Management as something that bothered them, which Canada of course did nothing about. When Freeland and Trudeau screwed Trump in the last CUSMA deal, promising 3% access to the entire Canadian dairy market then only allowing milk solids used in cheese making, and Trudeau insulted Trump in a hot mic situation at a G20 meeting while talking with Macron and Boris Johnson , a conversation shared by news outlets all over the world including the USA, Trump got his revenge. He belittled Trudeau when he scurried down to Mar A Largo to beg for tariff exemptions before Trump was even sworn in. He humiliated Trudeau in front of a whole room of people calling him Governor Trudeau. That is where the 51’st State thing started - as an insult against Trudeau. Trump did not forget that insult at the G20 nor the screwing on the tariffs nor the pledge Trudeau made to get our military spending up to 2% of GNP. Later , when he got back to Canada after that pledge to NATO - he bragged that it would be done - by 2035 - meaning, he had no intention of actually living up to that commitment. Canadians wonder why Trump has a hard on for Canada ? Now you know.
JT was a very inept prime minister. I was embarrassed and sad when I woke in morning to hear he had been elected in 2016 or whenever. Nothing he said or did changed my feelings about him. I remember most of what you say and that confirms my thoughts. I really wonder if those that support the Libs think about the long term implications of the policies and laws that are part of their platform. We are seeing what is happening in Europe and we are heading in the same direction.
The problem both in Canada and the US is that the left has control of the main stream media. And the general public have been indoctrinated by the leftist education systems. The public are therefore easily manipulated, and the majority don't have the critical thinking abilities to recognize the manipulation they are constantly bombarded with. These 2 problems have to be corrected before we can save western civilization. And make no mistake, western civilization is in grave jeopardy.
Canada Trump the arrangement syndrome constantly confuses people! No tariffs will not end. And yes the United States is our biggest trading partner so get over ourselves! As if the Liberals will ever ever be able to get back to the bargaining table no matter who's in power! Or Canadian identity is always being we are not American! Even though our livelihoods depend on the United States.
And it is important to remember that the additional tariffs Canada imposed hurt Canadians. The tariffs the USA imposed hurt Americans, except when joint CDN manufacturing is involved. There is 50% tariff on manufactured steel pipe for HVAC Projects coming into Canada. No such manufacturers exist in Western Canada. That is a Canadian tariff that Carney can fix instantly. Who is in charge in the USA doesn't change that.
Some good reminders, especially relating to the tariffs which Carney supporters argued were going to disappear if Democrats gained majorities in the House and Senate.
You are forgiven Brian for missing the Senate turnaround in the U.S. Next time - I wouid pay very close attention to the New York Times - Sienna Poll, because this is the second straight time they have called the election almost perfectly. They stated emphatically that both the House and the Senate would go to the Democrats and they were getting some heat about that from other polestars and media outlets. They were the only ones to call a Trump victory in 2024 as well. If you recall all of the other polls showed Kamila Harris up 4 points on election eve - except the New York Times Sienna Poll. They had Trump in a close win. Apparently they have a formula that they are not sharing with others that accounts for people not picking up the phone to talk to pollsters. Whatever they have - it’s working. I subscribe to the Times - it’s the greatest newspaper in the world in my opinion - they cover soooo many things and topics, it’s literally mind boggling. I will be paying much closer attention to their Sienna Polls moving forward.
Changing course - you are 100% correct about the Democrats not doing much on the tariff front,. Gavin Newsome, who many consider the front runner to lead the Democrats in 2028 said this week that they will not be looking at removing tariffs until a broader deal is reached. The level of ignorance that most Canadians possess never ceases to amaze me. These voters - especially the militaristic Elbows Up , Canada Love it or Leave it crowd - have to be some of the most uninformed and uneducated on the issues people on the planet. They swallow every thing David Cochrane and Rosey Barton along with Vassy Kapelas over at CTV regurgitate to them that their Liberal benefactors want stated. Whatever is said - it’s gospel. We have the most uneducated electorate in this country - at least on par with the hard core FOX News watching MAGA voters in the US. How far down are these people going to let our economy sink before they realize they have been duped and played for suckers by the very people they have been so devoted to.
I do believe that ICE played a factor in the election. The bigger factor was the way MSM portrayed the actions of ICE. 3 people were killed by ICE, in self-defense. The footage from the body cams was clear. Please tell me in what country it is ok to ram any police-type officer with your car, or intend to do so, without any consequences. If you don't want to be killed by ICE, there is always peaceful protest. Sadly, MSM left out a few details. That is so convenient fr people with TDS who do not want to actually do any research on what they are fed.
While the democrats have got the Senate and House, they now have to do something about the fundamental affordability problems if they hope to have a chance to keep and or improve gains in 2028.
Tariffs are a part of the problem, but the principal issue as rightly pointed out is the cost of diesel that underlies (powers) economies. This relies on a dramatic change in the situation in the Straits of Hormuz, aka the War-tensions with Iran. Changing these conditions seem nigh on impossible with a President who seems to view Iran as an existential problem to be solved not managed (such as was being done through JCPOA, etc) and who holds a veto along with the national security powers in the US division of powers.
Trump's administration has forever changed the situation. Prior to the war the 'threat of US military intervention' carried significant weight, at least enough to keep the situation below a manageable level to ensure that Iran's actions didn't close the straits. Now Iran has experienced what US military intervention actually looks like and to date have survived. While they don't appear to be thriving the Iranian regime is surviving and the outcome has given them leverage through an ability to punish the rest of the world's cost of living. At the same time the US-GCC relationship is likely very strained as GCC states have been directly impacted. So this is a strategic win for Iran to date.
The question now is how does the US extricate themselves from this mess while enabling the return to a modicum of normalcy in trade flow (oil, petro-chemicals, etc out of the region) upon which they too depend without significantly empowering Iran? An Iran who may choose to continue to punish their GCC neighbours and seek retribution on the rest of the world's standards of living.
Pandora's box has been opened and managing the unforeseen problems seems beyond this US administration, especially when compounded with the divisions in the region (Israel, GCC States, Yemen/Houthis, Gaza, etc).
Last night was repeat of Trumps election 2 years sgo.. the map was so red Jon King left the CNN stage from his preditions. He couldnt keep up.
The only difference this time is it's blue.. just a feeling, but hes not been well received in the US lately.
What choice do people have. He works for them. Like Carney works for us. Do they forget that or is it part of their plan. He has 2 years to make it right. To make the democrats look inadequate and stumble bumbs.
Trump talks big ..and always about $$. People like that.. Democrats talk about life and necessities.. but mobey rules and in both . But presented differently..
So, many thought like you. 50/50..if hoped for that..
Its trump, CNN had professors on that said as much.. he changes his mind too often for them. Trump knows that.. how he rolls....
Im looking forward to the coming weeks.. hope i can keep up. Lol

Sadly, so did I.
The world’s in for it now. Not good.
Agree 👍
Excellent article thank you.
and the video you attached to it brings it home!!
You’re right Carney should be listening to it, but we both know better he won’t😂🤣
He’s the one that lost his remote and it’s stuck on CBC🤮🤮

Government is often used a tool for politicians to impose their ideals on others while remaining insulated from the consequences of their actions.
And it is important to remember that the additional tariffs Canada imposed hurt Canadians. The tariffs the USA imposed hurt Americans, except when joint CDN manufacturing is involved. Carney is quite like Obama and Biden. He believes in Buy American from what I see.
