Carney can afford to make a mess of the negotations. The mood among Liberal voters today is that any misfortunes that result are Trump's fault. The government-funded Canadian media will cover for any missteps on Carney's part. And even if they didn't, that cake is baked. They won't change and the rest of us must live with the results for now. It troubles me that the more talented young people are leaving but I can't honestly counsel them to stay.

Carole Saville's avatar

I agree that counselling young folks to stay in Canada is not good advice. With half their wages gone to taxes, they won't ever get ahead, unless mom and dad have a big enough bank roll to help them out.

Denyse I O'Leary's avatar

I rarely give detailed advice to kids in these matters because I won't be around for the results. On the other hand, it seems only common sense to say, Well, if you can dance with the Bolshoi, dance with the Bolshoi. If you can work for NASA on the moon, work for NASA on the moon. Talented kids don't owe it to us to stay in Canada.

But one problem we face here is that brain drains tend to be cumulative over the years. The best and the brightest leave so the best we have left is second tier. They adapt our system to mediocrity and reward it. We are always fighting yesterdays' battles or nonsense battles, and trashing those who are getting ahead of us instead of finding a way to do better.

Here's an example: Gad Saad, a Montreal-based author, published a book called Suicidal Empathy, which soared to the top at Amazon Canada. But when I enquired for it at my local bookstore in Victoria, I was told, abruptly, that they had made a decision not to stock it. I am told that a number of other Canadian bookstores did that. Saad, meanwhile, having soared to the top of the New York Times's bestseller list, has announced that he is leaving for the States.

At 61, Saad is admittedly no spring chicken. But that is not my point. Rather, who would be surprised if, in a few years, Canadian bookstores are whining at the government for financial support? And the Nice people who helped the Liberals to a majority will sympathize and agree to provide it.

Many of them will profess to have no desire whatever to read Saad. And they will be happy to tell me what they think of the disgusting Jeff Bezos (thanks to whom I could buy the book for the friend who wanted it).

My overall concern is that many generations of brain drain to the United States have contributed to a situation where we are slowly swamped by contented mediocrity - and may be past the point of no return. I hope to be wrong but recent events don't make me think so.

Carole Saville's avatar

Was it Indigo that didn't carry the book? I remember Indigo not stocking the truckers convoy book that Andrew Lawton wrote, regardless that it was top of the list at Amazon for a while.

I like reading Saads stuff, and was happy he found a better place for himself and his family to live.

It was Bolen Books at Hillside Centre. I hadn't wanted to centre Bolen out because I am reasonably sure they are not alone. But if others are going to be implicated, I had better give the name. All I know is, if any of them is crying the blues to the government, demanding our money, remember this.

Angela's avatar

Excellent post & I believe right on point. I too won't be here to see the carnage but I feel bad for those who will & didn't listen to us.

Many thanks, Denyse, for your fine analysis of the managed decline of our once great country. My sister asked if Indigo had Suicidal Empathy. There were a few copies in hiding.

Oh.. you know what is going on for sure.

My engineer son got to hell out a few years ago. They are in TX. He said he can’t wait 20 years for some common sense to return to Canadian politics. And my other son never came back to Canada after 7 years in London. They went to CA instead in ‘02. A few words on that, they live in an area where they aren’t bombarded with radical Lefties. He says the new mayor of San Francisco is cleaning up that City. He may be a Dem but not the Bernie Sanders kind.

Denyse I O'Leary's avatar

The Liberals current desire to control, take down, or shake down the internet will hasten the decline. Major providers simply won't do business in Canada (they have said so) and we will be left with the ones we would not have chosen.

Among his many problems (which become Canadian problems) Carney thinks that he is smarter than almost everyone in the room. Carney as a banker was celebrated, treated with admiration and his opinion was valued in financial circles. He does not understand the ‘servant’ part of being a public servant.

When he couldn’t ‘beat’ Trump, Carney pouted, took his hockey sayings and came back home and pretended that he is tough. Many Canadians buy the tough thing because we smugly think we are better than Americans – with absolutely no concrete evidence that we are better than our neighbours.

That is why Carney continues to create disastrous MOU’s with Smith – he wants to win, he doesn’t care who gets hurt.

Nik's avatar

Why was Carney celebrated as a banker?

Who would ever be stupid enough to put a banker in charge of a country?

Banks are not your friend, they are the problem...

Merla Parker's avatar

The clueless elbows up supporters decided Carney has the skills and he was the only one who had the skills to deal with Trump. Carney has proven incompetent and unmotivated to get a deal done. If he was the master negotiator, he said he was then he should’ve been able to negotiate a good deal for Canada no matter who the American president was. He is simply out of his league. And unfortunately, we have a lot of low IQ voters who are not asking any questions and blaming Trump. Meanwhile, the Mexican president has gone ahead , rolled up her sleeves and gotten a deal done.

Carole Saville's avatar

Good comment. The Mexican president did get it done. No elbows up tough act. She just got the job done. Carney used Trump as a voting ploy and now has no room to move on a deal and continues to use Trump for votes.

Killiing Canada's multi-decades long trading with the USA should be a CRIMINAL OFFENSE as the results are most harmful to CANADIAN buisnesses amd CONSUMERS!!

Angela's avatar

Look at how he left the U.K. in terrible financial shape & THEY WARNED US THAT HE WASN'T WHO HE SAID HE WAS. But did we listen? NO! So we'll reap what he sits & bitch about it.

Reap what he sews

Mike Canary's avatar

He’s the perfect leader of the Liberals. Banker and economist. When have you ever seen a banker or economist held accountable for anything in history? Or a Liberal MP?

susan gerbes's avatar

and if you saw the interaction at Davos between Carney and Ezra Levant....Ezra asked him a question and Carney's answer was that you shouldn't come to an economist to get a political answer....says it all!!!

Penny Leifson's avatar

To use Carney’s hockey palaver, he has scored too many own goals already.

Jerry Grant's avatar

Carney as a central banker had huge staffs to help him decide on a single number every so often.

Mike Canary's avatar

On that subject - here is one of the more interesting articles (besides Brian Lilley’s) I recently read.

Great read. Thanks.

Carney is acting like a spoiled child that didn’t get his way. This is how he governs too, he’ll do anything to get his way, including letting Canadian Citizens suffer HIS consequences!! All while personally investing in the U.S. for himself, which has been extremely lucrative! The biggest hypocrite on the planet!!! Start negotiating!!!!!!!’

Penny Leifson's avatar

And BC’s Eby is the same - pouts, has tantrums, won’t share the playground, and approves Ferries from China. Fools, both!

PRAIRIESUN615530's avatar

Carney is not a "negotiator"...he, and his cabinet are not fit for the jobs or the outrageous salary's they give themselves.

Christine Barnett's avatar

I’d like to see or hear an average Canadian’s educated point of view on ANY aspect of the economy. Most have no idea of the workings of tariffs, nor any specific policies regarding any, or all the varied business, industries and corporations involved.

As you mentioned Brian, the US is not advocating anti-Canadian rhetoric. Canada and many Canadians are though. Single minded unwarranted retaliation. This is akin to a child perpetuating a radical adult’s reaction without knowing why.

We really are uneducated in our knowledge of economics and politics.

I have to add, that diversification in trade and unity in defence and security are necessary. But, don’t “cut off your nose to spite your face” as the saying goes.

There is a special, unprecedented, geographic and historical connection that our two countries have shared for centuries.

Even though, we probably all have our opinions concerning Americans (USA…USA…USA 😉) we generally share connections that benefit both countries.

Angela's avatar

You are correct & we'll rue the day Carney was elected.

Brian's avatar

Correction, Backroom selected not elected!

Christine Barnett's avatar

But isn’t that the underlying issue. Was he REALLY elected. The presence of deeply embedded CCP/United Front in all aspects of our society (including politics) has directed our future for even more than the past decade.

The question would be, how do we reverse this destructive path.

Side note…this has been happening globally.

John Powell's avatar

Thank you grandpa!

Laura knowlton's avatar

The Globalist agenda has used the American "Trump" tariffs in a psyop against the citizens of Canada. America has always had tariffs against Canada to some degree. This government has imposed an unreasonable amount of tax on it's people awhile industries/manufacturing has left Canada because of the red tape and taxes. A manufacturing business in Burlington Ontario was quoted saying that the Industrial Carbon tax is far more damaging than the tariffs.

Unfortunately the Globalists have down this same agenda throughout the UK and Europe, as well as Canada. Until People start digging into the reality rather than The psyop that is being perpetrated against the citizens by the leftist agenda through MSM and their government, we will not only loose our way of life, but our western civilization to the Muslim Brotherhood that is being run by these Globalists. Carney is part of "The Financial City of London" their, "HIS" agenda is to take out Trump. The Democrats and Carney are using the leftist voters to accomplish their agenda.

Will people wakeup in time?

Once you see what is going on, you can't unsee it.

Lord Chancellor's avatar

It’s cute watching Canadians acting tough against America when they know deep down they have no leverage. LOL

YMS's avatar

Canada has leverage just no negotiating skills or competent negotiators.

Colin Pratt's avatar

Some Canadians whine and want to blame Trump and the US, however it is Canada that is to blame. The Canadian Government hasn't lived up to ANY agreements, from NATO and onwards. And now the US/Trump is to blame? So what HAS Canada lived up to? At 75 - if I could move south, I would in a heartbeat.

Laura knowlton's avatar

Me too, just need to figure out how🤔

Pat's avatar

People say: Carney doesn't understand. He misjudges or neglects. Some dream of a one-term PM.

I think he gives a s*! He puts things in place that will benefit him in his after-PM life. He will make himself rich, like dear Justin, and then move to his beloved Europe.

Clayton Oberg's avatar

I will offer my very Alberta perspective on this. Carney has devoted the latter part of his life to promoting, enforcing, and profiting from a system of economic incentives designed to force societies towards net-zero by 2050. His and his family’s wealth along with his international reputation are dependent on him staying the course on climate. Carney is smart enough to realize that this will require economic sacrifice for Canadians and will stall productivity. Such an approach would not be politically sustainable if Canada were to maintain close economic ties with the U.S. when they are not burdening their economy in the same way we will be. I believe as much isolation from the U.S. economy as Canadians will tolerate works in Carney’s favor as long as we can be convinced that the Americans are the villains.

Brian's avatar

So many foolish people in Canada, saddens me to say that but some Liberal voters think they are bound to be faithful to the "party" and could not consider that there might be a better option. In actual fact you are voting for a narcissistic tyrant who is using your favorite "party" to gain wealth and power for himself and his investors while the country suffers for it. He is not interested in making a deal with the US as it does not fit in his WEF/UN/CCP "NEW WORLD ORDER". The little man thinks that he is smarter than everybody else, but he's looking more and more not fit to be running this country. Trump is not the problem, Carney is!

NW Alberta's avatar

I've had to kowtow to the CRTC since 1999. They are a cancer on media companies, mostly the Canadian ones like me.

Donald Ashman's avatar

First of all, God bless your little grandchild.

Secondly, this is a crucially informative and essential article. I was not aware that the dairy supply management allotment worked as such. So often you read someone defending the quotas as “inactive” because “they Americans don’t use the allotment amount.” Now, we know why.

The Liberal Party ethos is that what is good for the Liberal Party is also good for Canada. Until that notion is intellectually defunded, my astonishment with my fellow Canadians remains.

Thirdly, could it be that Canada’s first-best option is to unilaterally lower all of our tariffs toward American goods and service imports, and discontinue the costly Supply Management program?

Nah, please refer to my paragraph three.

My best to you and your subscribers .

Carole Saville's avatar

I believe that Canada would work better as 7 or 8 smaller countries that had actual trade deals. Currently we are spinning our wheels because the federal government has been picking corporate winners and losers and funding them with our tax dollars. And, their picks haven't been very good.

Donald Ashman's avatar

That is interesting.

Instead of breaking up the Country, what if we had four Provinces instead of 10?

The West, Ontario, Quebec, and the East. Decentralized so that the main infighting remained in the region.

susan gerbes's avatar

I'm glad to not have a lot of American dairy....their policies re antibiotics and hormones injected into animals is not my cup of tea, or my kind of steak.....lol

Carmen's avatar

Problem is Carnage lives with his family in the US moved his company there. There’s Eurasia Group but he’s bashing the US!! Trump or Carney won’t be around for another election!! If I was Trump I’d kick them all out of the US!! People aren’t travelling to the US because of the dollar. Border cities are still crossing for their gas. It’s cheaper!! He’s made the IS the big bad place but takes advantage from f the country!! He’s a fraud!!

John Chittick's avatar

The trade irritants you mention along with such protected cartels as banks and telecoms in addition to dairy are pimples on the butts of the significance of the forest sector, aluminum, steel, autos and parts. They should all be ammunition in seeking the best deal possible from a more apparently protectionist US. Canadian would be net winners as consumers in their removal.

When bookstores start banning popular books you know the Commie Woke government has successfully manipulated another of its weak-brained targets. Denyse, if you live in Victoria you are definitely in the midst of Red territory. That university is known for its radical left-wing culture. Same as University of Lethbridge, it is Red territory in the midst of Blue. All of the teachers, students and admin people probably live in the area. Could be reason they didn’t want to see any book that might reveal a truth they can’t handle.
