Carney can afford to make a mess of the negotations. The mood among Liberal voters today is that any misfortunes that result are Trump's fault. The government-funded Canadian media will cover for any missteps on Carney's part. And even if they didn't, that cake is baked. They won't change and the rest of us must live with the results for now. It troubles me that the more talented young people are leaving but I can't honestly counsel them to stay.
I agree that counselling young folks to stay in Canada is not good advice. With half their wages gone to taxes, they won't ever get ahead, unless mom and dad have a big enough bank roll to help them out.
I rarely give detailed advice to kids in these matters because I won't be around for the results. On the other hand, it seems only common sense to say, Well, if you can dance with the Bolshoi, dance with the Bolshoi. If you can work for NASA on the moon, work for NASA on the moon. Talented kids don't owe it to us to stay in Canada.
But one problem we face here is that brain drains tend to be cumulative over the years. The best and the brightest leave so the best we have left is second tier. They adapt our system to mediocrity and reward it. We are always fighting yesterdays' battles or nonsense battles, and trashing those who are getting ahead of us instead of finding a way to do better.
Here's an example: Gad Saad, a Montreal-based author, published a book called Suicidal Empathy, which soared to the top at Amazon Canada. But when I enquired for it at my local bookstore in Victoria, I was told, abruptly, that they had made a decision not to stock it. I am told that a number of other Canadian bookstores did that. Saad, meanwhile, having soared to the top of the New York Times's bestseller list, has announced that he is leaving for the States.
At 61, Saad is admittedly no spring chicken. But that is not my point. Rather, who would be surprised if, in a few years, Canadian bookstores are whining at the government for financial support? And the Nice people who helped the Liberals to a majority will sympathize and agree to provide it.
Many of them will profess to have no desire whatever to read Saad. And they will be happy to tell me what they think of the disgusting Jeff Bezos (thanks to whom I could buy the book for the friend who wanted it).
My overall concern is that many generations of brain drain to the United States have contributed to a situation where we are slowly swamped by contented mediocrity - and may be past the point of no return. I hope to be wrong but recent events don't make me think so.
Among his many problems (which become Canadian problems) Carney thinks that he is smarter than almost everyone in the room. Carney as a banker was celebrated, treated with admiration and his opinion was valued in financial circles. He does not understand the ‘servant’ part of being a public servant.
When he couldn’t ‘beat’ Trump, Carney pouted, took his hockey sayings and came back home and pretended that he is tough. Many Canadians buy the tough thing because we smugly think we are better than Americans – with absolutely no concrete evidence that we are better than our neighbours.
That is why Carney continues to create disastrous MOU’s with Smith – he wants to win, he doesn’t care who gets hurt.
Carney is acting like a spoiled child that didn’t get his way. This is how he governs too, he’ll do anything to get his way, including letting Canadian Citizens suffer HIS consequences!! All while personally investing in the U.S. for himself, which has been extremely lucrative! The biggest hypocrite on the planet!!! Start negotiating!!!!!!!’
I’d like to see or hear an average Canadian’s educated point of view on ANY aspect of the economy. Most have no idea of the workings of tariffs, nor any specific policies regarding any, or all the varied business, industries and corporations involved.
As you mentioned Brian, the US is not advocating anti-Canadian rhetoric. Canada and many Canadians are though. Single minded unwarranted retaliation. This is akin to a child perpetuating a radical adult’s reaction without knowing why.
We really are uneducated in our knowledge of economics and politics.
I have to add, that diversification in trade and unity in defence and security are necessary. But, don’t “cut off your nose to spite your face” as the saying goes.
There is a special, unprecedented, geographic and historical connection that our two countries have shared for centuries.
Even though, we probably all have our opinions concerning Americans (USA…USA…USA 😉) we generally share connections that benefit both countries.
The Globalist agenda has used the American "Trump" tariffs in a psyop against the citizens of Canada. America has always had tariffs against Canada to some degree. This government has imposed an unreasonable amount of tax on it's people awhile industries/manufacturing has left Canada because of the red tape and taxes. A manufacturing business in Burlington Ontario was quoted saying that the Industrial Carbon tax is far more damaging than the tariffs.
Unfortunately the Globalists have down this same agenda throughout the UK and Europe, as well as Canada. Until People start digging into the reality rather than The psyop that is being perpetrated against the citizens by the leftist agenda through MSM and their government, we will not only loose our way of life, but our western civilization to the Muslim Brotherhood that is being run by these Globalists. Carney is part of "The Financial City of London" their, "HIS" agenda is to take out Trump. The Democrats and Carney are using the leftist voters to accomplish their agenda.
Will people wakeup in time?
Once you see what is going on, you can't unsee it.
People say: Carney doesn't understand. He misjudges or neglects. Some dream of a one-term PM.
I think he gives a s*! He puts things in place that will benefit him in his after-PM life. He will make himself rich, like dear Justin, and then move to his beloved Europe.
The trade irritants you mention along with such protected cartels as banks and telecoms in addition to dairy are pimples on the butts of the significance of the forest sector, aluminum, steel, autos and parts. They should all be ammunition in seeking the best deal possible from a more apparently protectionist US. Canadian would be net winners as consumers in their removal.
With respect to supply management sure let’s eliminate it but let’s also make sure there is a level playing field. American farmers are directly subsidized by their government through programs such as Dairy Margin Coverage, Dairy Revenue Protection, and the Dairy Price Support Programs. They are far from free market traders.

To use Carney’s hockey palaver, he has scored too many own goals already.
Carney as a central banker had huge staffs to help him decide on a single number every so often.
Why was Carney celebrated as a banker?
Who would ever be stupid enough to put a banker in charge of a country?
Banks are not your friend, they are the problem...
Thank you grandpa!

And BC’s Eby is the same - pouts, has tantrums, won’t share the playground, and approves Ferries from China. Fools, both!
Carney is not a "negotiator"...he, and his cabinet are not fit for the jobs or the outrageous salary's they give themselves.

It’s cute watching Canadians acting tough against America when they know deep down they have no leverage. LOL

I think Canadians need to grow up
You may be missing two links here: “As a country, Canada still has tariffs on many goods, you can read about them here and here.”

I keep say this but nobody listens.
The Americans are not asking us to dump supply management. They just want us to play by the rules we agreed to in the last CUSMA negotiations.
It's a simple resolution if it's labeled, people can make their own choice. But liberals won't make it easy, and it's not really about that
