The criticism of Harper then, sounds similar to the criticism of Poilievre today.

Funny you should notice that...

One of the best Prime Ministers we ever had. Especially considering who replaced him.

Fasinating look at how conventional wisdom crashes against actual outcomes. The parallel between those Harper predictions and today's political landscape really jumps out. I remeber covering local politics years back and the confident forecasts about inevitble winners turned out totally wrong. That backpacking with a flag line captures perfectly how superficial some of these critiques actually were.

You huminize your, on your side notes, Brian. It must have been exciting to ride on the Harper bus and see the smiling faces of Canadians. After fifteen years of liberal rule, we really need a change. I hope you can ride the vote conservative bus.

What s great article...i had to re read the first line ..2005..i thought Brian was in Florida at first.

Your boss sounded like a funny guy.. cover the PM.. you are..great line!

Mr Harper was a jewel. We were lucky..

The floor crossing ... go with who we like!

Pierre has Harper in his corner..and i have not heard him say..hes not ready! As he did with Trudeau. A good thing..

May the best Team win the election.

If your boss says go to cover the PM and points to Pierre...I'd say..a win..

We lost by 500 votes in Brant(Phil McColeman) and it was the first campaign I got heavily involved in and it was crushing. We learned a lot of lessons and have had a Conservative mayor, MP and MPP ever since. A complete flip from 2006. From an article by Peter MacKay:

“This new approach was not well received by many in the public service, who referred to his government as the “temps.””

If he really had a secret agenda, he would have fired the lot of them.

Stephen Harper was definitely one, if not the best, of the prime ministers we have had. His critics thought he was in bed with the oil companies and had a hidden agenda. Then came Trudeau and scandal after scandal. We need another Harper and my belief is that Poilievre is the next Harper.

He was the last competent person to occupy the office.
