Mark Carney will get his majority, Doug Ford his waterfront and your private property rights are up in the air...
Many of you won’t like what I’m about to write, but it’s better to be honest.
Chances are very high that Mark Carney will get his coveted majority on April 13. That’s the day that three by-elections will be held with two in Toronto and one just north of Montreal.
All three ridings were held by the Liberals and my expectation is that they will win all three this time.
That combined with Matt Jeneroux crossing the floor to join Team Carney will give the Liberals the 172 seats needed to have a majority.
A couple of interesting points in my column in the Toronto Sun detail part of why I think the Liberals will win, even in the battleground of Terrebonne. It has to do with greater access to volunteers and more importantly, the Liberals can outspend the Bloc Quebecois in that riding by more than $200,000.
Read the column to find out why?
Doug Ford wants big things for Toronto’s waterfront…
An expanded airport? Sounds good!
A massive and modern new convention centre? We need one!
Ignoring the whiny squatters who live on the Toronto Islands? I’m here for it.
Premier Doug Ford wants to ensure that Toronto’s waterfront gets developed properly. He’s already moving ahead with a great new design for Ontario Place that includes moving the Science Centre there, fixing and expanding the concert venue there, adding restaurants and bars, and of course the Therme facility that is dismissed by critics as “a luxury spa.”
Add on the beaches and parkland and it will be great.
Ford is moving ahead with this despite a push by the nattering nabobs of negativism who don’t want the city to have nice things.
In the last while, Ford has mused about expanding the airport and building a new convention centre and on Monday went off about the need for both and the need to ignore the whiners.
Amen to that!
Meanwhile, about your land rights in Vancouver…
I’ve written about the Musqueam Indian Band agreement and the Cowichan Tribes court case that handed over rights and title to both groups.
We’ve had governments telling us to ignore those pesky words that imply ownership and we’ve got people online claiming that the feds gave away all your land.
What’s the truth?
Well, that’s why I turned to Dwight Newman, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan and an expert in constitutional law and Indigenous rights. He’s not going to tell you everything is fine, don’t worry, but he’s also not going to tell you that the sky is falling.
It’s the latest edition of the Full Comment Podcast and if you are concerned about this issue, I’d say it is well worth the listen.

I accepted that the liberals won again because they were a minority. However if they win a majority and start implementing more of their progressive policies, I am seriously considering leaving Canada. Everything is in chaos, immigration, housing, debt, health, antisemitism, speech, hate, wokism, and more. How can conservatives and liberals live together as we have such different visions of what Canada should be. It used to be different - we had similar values but now they are polar opposite.
There is no way the liberals will win Terrebonne. Period. The liberals cheated to win it by one vote. It’s Quebec.
As for the two Toronto ridings with less than a month before advance voting I have not heard who the conservatives are running in those ridings.
I don’t give up hope but Carney js running Canada into the ground faster than an errant meteor.
