Back in early September, I was in Calgary to appear at the Canada Strong and Free event. I was actually moderating a discussion with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith about what she was looking for from Ottawa - pipelines, bad laws addressed - you know much of what was dealt with last week.
While I was there, I recorded an episode of the Full Comment Podcast with my old friend and criminal defence lawyer Solomon Friedman to talk about Castle Law and self-defence.
I’m bringing back a clip from that discussion after Premier Smith said that she will instruct officials not to prosecute people who are defending themselves, their families or homes. You can watch Smith below, but also watch Friedman and I discuss this issue in the video above.
Back in September, he said we don’t need new laws. Castle Law already exists in Canada is my view and Friedman agrees to a degree depending on the definition of Castle Law.
The clip above opens with us talking about the Harper government’s criminal code changes to fix the self-defence issue and ends with him calling for premiers to do exactly what Danielle Smith is doing now.
