Carney and Trump's war of words, a thaw in Greenland, fighting over China...
And acknowledging the taxpayer once again.
Carney responded to Donald Trump today.
At a speech in Quebec City ahead of a Liberal cabinet meeting and return of the House of Commons next week, Carney was delivering a speech steeped in history, nationalism and a further critique of the United States. In response to Trump saying that Canada only lives because of the United States, Carney hit back with an ad libbed line.
“Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian,” Carney said.
I wrote about the speech for the Toronto Sun, you can read my full thoughts on it here. Maybe not my full thoughts, I’m still digesting this and the full Davos speech.
There is something going on here, trying to figure it out.
Here’s the full speech from today in case you want to watch or hear it. I’ve chosen CBC just for the French translation.
Meanwhile, Lutnick is commenting on Carney…
Howard Lutnick is one of the key people in the Trump administration dealing with the trade deal with Canada. This morning he was on Bloomberg Television from Davos and had lots to say about Canada and Carney.
Here’s part of it.
Jamieson Greer is perhaps the most important person, besides Trump, on the trade file because he’s the lead negotiator. He was also commenting and once again saying that we likely wouldn’t be happy with the decision long term.
The Love Boat, exciting and new…
About Greenland and that invasion…
This headline is from the New York Times, one of the media outlets that really pushed the idea of a Greenland invasion. In the end, that isn’t on the table, something Trump made clear in his speech at Davos on Wednesday.
What is on the table?
An assurance that China and Russia will be kept out from control of ports, airports and infrastructure. There is agreement that neither of those countries will have any access to mining or mineral rights on Greenland.
The United States will get some kind of greater access and say over bases than the previous 1951 treaty that was update in 2004. Whether that includes sovereignty rights all appears to be up for discussion and debate.
Oh, and other nordic nations of NATO, including Canada, will step up on Arctic security.
This is pretty close to how I’ve been saying this would end for about the last three weeks.
Acknowledging taxpayers instead of land…
I mentioned Daniel Tate’s excellent video where he went to Toronto City Hall and read a “taxpayer acknowledgement” at a budget committee meeting. This morning I had a chance to sit down and chat with Daniel, hope you enjoy it.

More is unfolding in Carney's actions. It feels to me like he's more and more a puppet of china influence.... I don't like it and there isn't a Canadian that voted for this closeness to Canada's most dangerous enemy. If Carney calls our current situation thriving he needs to resign in disgrace.
Any bets Carney calls an election BEFORE the USMCA negotiations???
