It’s awful. And a direct result of federal government DEI and Chows pandering to Muslim minorities along with most provincial premiers. I hate this terrible antisemitism
The biggest problem is that we cannot have honest discussions about WHO is committing anti-Semitic acts and participating in hate marches and WHY they are doing it. If the Conservative Party wanted to be useful, it could begin by sponsoring such discussions.
Lots going on quietly. Most people don’t advertise their departure. Liquidation of assets. But there are many. And Carney knows this too. He doesn’t care. And I write this from Vienna. Which was very similar to Toronto 100 years ago in terms of size and accomplishment of its Jewish community. All but erased. And yes. Vienna, which was a global epicentre of excellence in so many areas, well….
I am surprised at the number of effective people I run into who are trying to leave. They run into roadblocks, of course. Sadly, they don't think it is worth trying to fix things at home but that might be the only real option. First, defund the legacy media so that we can have honest discussions again that are not being drowned out by its noise.
First you say that the folks you talk to should try "to fix things at home". It is my perception that they have been trying and have been pointing out the problems and recommending solutions such as enforcement of existing laws, etc. but the politicians and bureaucrats have shown no interest whatsoever other than the performative nonsense such as the MC committee.
Second, you want to "defund the legacy" - with which I agree very strongly - but the government is not only continuing on that path but increasing such funding.
Therefore, why, oh why, can you possibly think that things can get better here. As is said, hope is not a plan.
Just for the record, most of the peope I hear from have done nothing other than vote Liberal and denounce Trump. I know there are people who are trying but I don't happen to run into them nearly as often.
I do not think things will get better. As they stand, they can only get worse, and I think people sense that without wanting to talk about it. It makes them hate Trump more. That is their response.
I'll chime in here. I am one of many who has been working hard for more than a decade to draw attention to the toxic antisemitism that is deeply embedded in Canada's core insitutions. Start with PCO and GAC. But the culture of Ottawa is horrid. And this is no secret. Leadership is top down. Pretending to address these issues with anodyne platitudes has been the "go to" strategy since 2015. So. Sorry. I personally can not do more than I have done. And I'm not the only one. At a certain point we have to take a very hard, unsentimental look at what is going on. As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor I can tell you this: I am hard-wired to be sensitive to the signs. Again - ironic that I write this from Vienna. A city that systematically drove out its Jewish population - which was very similar in size and accomplishment and devotion to Austria - as we have in Toronto today. Most Viennese waited too long. We know how that story ended. For me and others the stakes are very real and very high. The broader society in Canada has either chosen passivity or does not realize what is going on (responsibility of citizens to inform themselves) or does not have a problem with it. I do not have the luxury of waiting for the final curtain call. Nor do my children, who are young adults. Well educated. And shattered over what their home has become. They grew up in Toronto, attending Jewish day schools. Going to Jewish community centres. All their lives they had security guards at school. At the pool. Did you ever ask yourself WHY? Well - they sure asked me and I had to explain that to them. I will not explain to them why Canadian society tolerates the toxic and violent environment we see today. FFS - these days Toronto police are protecting Jew haters yelling and protesting outside an assisted living building for Jewish elderly, many of whom are compromised by age. Where is the outrage? We have been targeted for three years. What, exactly, do you suggest we DO?
Vivian, you (that is a collective, not a singular) are doing what you have to do: you are leaving.
I am not Jewish myself so your very real distress is not felt by me or my family in the same way as it is for you. Nevertheless, my parents raised me to want and expect a very different behavior than what is found in Canada now.
I have said to various folks that, if I were younger (I am now 75), I would very likely leave Canada. Instead, the best that I can do is to work for Alberta independence, for Alberta to leave Canada. What does that have to do with the topic at hand, you ask?
A whole lot of we independentistes argue that Canada is not whatsoever the country that we grew up in and we would like to leave to try to restore a lot of that older life ethic. When we speak to the issue of out of control immigration we are called racists but, no, we are not racists; we do not care about your color or religion but only that you work hard, contribute to your community and treat others well. Most of us are first or second, perhaps third (my case) generation immigrants ourselves and we understand how immigration has helped the country that we grew up in. The problem is the current out of control immigration system has imported folks who have no sense of what we in Canada on the Prairies have historically believed, that is the equality of our fellow citizens, regardless of race or religion.
I simply feel that Canada has gone too far and cannot now be successfully changed from what it has become.
My point is that many of we in Alberta also believe that we must leave this country that we used to love. And for the same reasons.
I apologize if my way of response has offended folks but, really, a whole lot of Canadians see what is happening and are trying to find ways to cope simply because so many of us don't see Canada as anything at all similar to where we grew up.
I’m so sorry that you have to look to live elsewhere because our society has failed you. I’m embarrassed and ashamed as every real Canadian should be that we have e not been able to protect you! I was not aware of the underlying antisemitism that I have witnessed the last 3.5 years existed at every level of government and even unions. I honestly don’t understand why! Even the jewish MP,s do nothing about it and they have a majority and could do something. I am looking to live elsewhere for this and many other reasons. I was hoping the US might be a possibility but now I’m not sure. I think Trump is doing a great job in stopping what jew hatred he can but when the mayor of NYC is muslim 20 years after 911 i realize how sick society is!
Canada has created a disaster. There is NO security screening for "migrants". Ask the government to share the protocols applied to screen Syrian refugees. They refuse to answer. Well - guess. Do you think they screened?
Thanks very much for your thoughtful reply, Vivian. As before, the foundational problem is that we cannot admit who is doing this, which makes public discussion difficult - and an organized public response impossible.
Suppose the situation were this (I speak hesitantly because I am not aware of serious research in the area): It turns out to be mainly new immigrants/migrants from the Middle East and students radicalized by profs at taxpayer-funded U's who are responsible for the targeted hate marches, vandalism, and arson.
Obvious policy approaches are not hard to come up with.
The government's current "some people did some things" approach seems designed to prevent an information-based policy approach.
That is characteristic of Liberal government in general today. This situation suits them but there is no need to say so. And those who vote for them, even those who claim that they are not anti-Semitic, are content to go on balloo-ing against Donald Trump and accusing each other of not having enough Canadian flags flapping in the wind.
Canada, U have no idea what is going on in your backyard now. Personally know about 20 Toronto Jews who have relocated (made aliah) to Israel in the last 3 years. High achievers. Know another 6 who are checking out Panama. Don't even talk about Florida. U do not want to be attacked on the street, or shot in your house of worship, even with 14 cameras perpetually on, searching every bag, hired security and off duty police with guns. Canada, U have no idea what is going on in your backyard now.
I'm ashamed this is happening in Canada. I guess "never again" was simply a slogan that meant nothing! How ignorant have we become as a society? I want no part of it.
I am shocked, horrified and outraged about this anti-Jew and pro-Muslim that is happening in Canada. How can we stop our political leaders from such insanity. Thank God Dalton McGuinty did not bring in Sharia law. Thank God we have a deep rooted law, bioth criminal and
Not for long Ruth, I’m afraid. Something truly drastic has to dethrone Carney, the Liberals … and the Democrats in the US. So much collusion. It’s truly mind boggling.
Neither one seems to care about Canada & Canadians. Carney has no vested interest in Canada & Chow apparently has been paid off by the CCP. How else could this crap be tolerated?
First of all, Brian, good on you for taking a stand.
I admit to being so naive: I never thought antisemitism could take hold in Canada. I thought we were too civilized, too cosmopolitan, and too caring to ever let such a cancer grow.
I am of the generation that demanded Jewish folks be welcomed to our private clubs, our professional schools, and our elected positions. That we have receded so precipitously should be a source of national shame.
What is the answer? The first step is to declare that this is unacceptable, and that it shall not continue. The second step is to stop the institutional demonizing of Israel, Zionism, and the belief that Jews are the source of all ills in society. The third step is to stop infantilising and contextualising the folks that hold views that are contrary to our common good.
The fourth step is to vigorously arrest and prosecute “protesters” whose motives are antithetical to a civilised Western Society.
Until we are ready to take these steps, might as well buckle up and get used to more of the same.
We have a Prime Minister who felt it prudent to “recognise” a Country that doesn’t exist, and to claim the Israeli President would be arrested if he landed in Canada.
Has anyone done a study on who engages in anti-Semitic hate marches, defacements of synagogues, or attacks on Jewish businesses in Canada and published the results? If so, we could make that a starting point in deciding what to do.
If not, why hasn't anyone done that? Because the researchers would be attacked for posting honest results - because they raise too many sensitive issues?
This is only one of the many disasters our national self-righteousness is pushing us towards.
If I tried to engage my neighbours in any kind of a discussion of this, the talk would soon pivot to the embodiment of evil, Donald Trump. I am beginning to see how sick all that is. It is a way of NOT seeing what we need to see here and now in Canada.
When you have a PM who has shown anti-Semitism, you can definitely expect an increase of hatred towards our Jewish communities! Deplorable and needs to be addressed immediately as this is not acceptable
Canada is rapidly looking more like Germany in the 1930's than the country we grew up in. Getting worse now than ever before and the Carney Liberals are doing nothing to fix it...they don't want to offend all their antisemitic supporters.
What does it say when you welcome, with open arms, those who will openly start a "war" with another ethnic group?
Our economy is in the dumpster and now Social anxiety and unrest are on the rise; the perfect storm for someone who is a Globalist and partnering with a Communist Country...........
As Canadians who believe in the values that founded this country we need to stand up against this evil. I will not accept this quietly and this will not stop with the Jews.
You can point the finger right at Carney and Chow for what is happening to our Jewish community. Carney said he would arrest the only Democratic Leader in the middle east to appease a kangroo court and for votes. They both have turned a blind eye to the hate marches against Israel. Votes come first and neither should be in Public office IMO. Chow said "Free Palistine". Free them from what. Again votes. So sad and it's getting worse.
If the people immigrating to Canada are anti-Semities when they arrive, the problem will only get bigger. And bigger. Particularly if there are little or no repercussions to these abhorrent attacks.
It’s awful. And a direct result of federal government DEI and Chows pandering to Muslim minorities along with most provincial premiers. I hate this terrible antisemitism
Not so Fun fact. Carney said :” Muslim values are Canadian values. “
One of Carney’s current speech writers is a man named Lloyd Rang who serves as a Clarington ward 2 councillor. Owns a liberal PR firm.
Muslim population in Durham in 2021was 7.5 %. It has probably doubled since then.
Unfettered unvetted immigration is the root cause of many troubling issues in Canada.
Yes, that and the despicable attitudes of our so-called leaders.
The biggest problem is that we cannot have honest discussions about WHO is committing anti-Semitic acts and participating in hate marches and WHY they are doing it. If the Conservative Party wanted to be useful, it could begin by sponsoring such discussions.
Just for the liberals to shut it down.
And yes. Well, Denyse, you offer two points.

You have just identified the problem: voting Liberal and blaming everything in life on DJT when the problems are far, far, far closer to home.
I'll chime in here. I am one of many who has been working hard for more than a decade to draw attention to the toxic antisemitism that is deeply embedded in Canada's core insitutions. Brilliant post.

I know many - most have gone to the US.
“The answer” is to deport all the newly arrived people who are responsible for these crimes.
It is not just the newly arrived.
It is in the law schools, the high schools, the academy, and even our public schools.
As Brian alludes, it is endemic in our society; it is truly “who we are”.
I'm ashamed this is happening in Canada. I guess "never again" was simply a slogan that meant nothing! How ignorant have we become as a society? I want no part of it.
You put that really well, Angela.
I too am ashamed. These are words I felt I would never have to type.
Actually, Angela, the more correct way of expressing it is, "Never again - until the next time." And this is the start of the next time.
Damned governments who pander to this stuff and encourage it1
I am shocked, horrified and outraged about this anti-Jew and pro-Muslim that is happening in Canada. How can we stop our political leaders from such insanity. Thank God Dalton McGuinty did not bring in Sharia law. Thank God we have a deep rooted law, bioth criminal and
civic based on our British and French ancestors.
Not for long Ruth, I’m afraid. Something truly drastic has to dethrone Carney, the Liberals … and the Democrats in the US. So much collusion. It’s truly mind boggling.
Canada prefers the new immigrants to the Jews. That is why the situation is tolerated. Perhaps even, dare I say, encouraged.
The Islamic vote is far bigger than the Jewish community. Carney and Chow know this.
Neither one seems to care about Canada & Canadians. Carney has no vested interest in Canada & Chow apparently has been paid off by the CCP. How else could this crap be tolerated?
Money and “persuasion” talks.
Liberal government. Not all of Canada. But your point is well made
For whatever reason Ted, you’re right.
First of all, Brian, good on you for taking a stand.
I admit to being so naive: I never thought antisemitism could take hold in Canada. I thought we were too civilized, too cosmopolitan, and too caring to ever let such a cancer grow.

Perhaps we could start there.
Agree with all four of your steps. Carney is symptomatic and responsible at the same time. He is amoral
I think he is worse than amoral, John.
I think he is ruthless in the pursuit of wealth, power and influence.
And what do we get from our jet-setting Prime Minister Mark Carney? Not a word - only virtue signalling and Muslim Values are Canadian Values! Really?
Just like his predecessor.
Has anyone done a study on who engages in anti-Semitic hate marches, defacements of synagogues, or attacks on Jewish businesses in Canada and published the results? If so, we could make that a starting point in deciding what to do.

When you have a PM who has shown anti-Semitism, you can definitely expect an increase of hatred towards our Jewish communities! Deplorable and needs to be addressed immediately as this is not acceptable
The Liberal Party flicked on the green light.
Antisemitism became fashionable as a result of the actions of Justin Trudeau, Mark Carney, and the Liberal Party of Canada.
Thing is it's really not just about the Jews. Do people understand that? If getting rid of all Jews actually happens, guess who is next?
Cause you know we have a 2 tier Justice system one for immigrants and one for us national born citizens
And it's only going to get worse cuz "hurt feelings" are now taken into consideration. How stupid are we?
Canada is rapidly looking more like Germany in the 1930's than the country we grew up in. Getting worse now than ever before and the Carney Liberals are doing nothing to fix it...they don't want to offend all their antisemitic supporters.

I’m ashamed at the lack of effort to protect this community. The burning continues across Canada.
"Muslim values are Canada's values".
NO!

All you need to do is look at France and the UK, you can see what is coming and it wont be long if it doesn't stop.
