Brazen attacks on Jews a fact of life in Canada now...

It appears this is who come of us are.

I write this about 35,000 feet above the oven below me. I’m not supposed to be writing, I’m supposed to be taking time off, but I am sickened by what happened.

Another weekend, another cowardly attack on a Jewish institution. Last weekend it was shots fired at Kiva’s bakery in Toronto, this weekend it’s a brazen arson attack in Montreal.

Nöam, a kosher restaurant in Montreal, was doused in gasoline and set on fire. What is left now is just a burned husk of a building.

This was all reportedly caught on video surveillance cameras.

They don’t care anymore, they are openly saying it with their actions, Jews aren’t welcome here anymore.

Canada is home to the fourth largest Jewish community in the world. Toronto has the largest Jewish community in Canada and prior to October 7, 2023 it was growing.

Anyone who has lived or spent significant time knows that Jewish life and culture has long been central to life and culture of the whole city.

For how much longer?

Shortly after October 7, I spoke with Ben Shapiro who said every Jew he knew was getting a gun to protect themselves and their family. Ben lives in the United States where that is easier to do, but I started to hear from Jews in Toronto that they were taking their gun course and getting their licence just in case.

When Michael Sachs started talking to me about Jews leaving Canada because they didn’t feel safe it seemed extreme. It doesn’t anymore.

Of course, I recently also spoke to Gad Saad about why he was leaving Montreal for Mississippi and rampant antisemitism in Montreal was a major role.

I don’t know what the answer is here, but I know it isn’t pretending we don’t have a problem or making statements that say this isn’t who we are.

Clearly, for a growing number in Canada, being sick Jew haters and being open about it is exactly who they are.
