Canada works best when rules make sense, but a growing provincial patchwork creates needless confusion. Today, depending on their postal code, adult Canadians face conflicting regulations and uneven access to legal smoke-free alternatives. The goal isn’t more rules — it’s better rules. Federal and provincial leaders must work together to establish one clear, consistent national framework that protects those underage, strengthens enforcement, and supports informed adult choice.
The socialists are coming, the socialists are coming…
Most of the focus on the midterms south of the border is on Donald Trump, but there is another interesting fight happening.
There is a battle for the soul of the Democratic Party.
We’ve been watching the Republican Party change over the past several years from their traditional positions to more of a MAGA party. Steve Bannon, one of the key players in the MAGA movement, and Trump’s chief strategist in his first term, defines this as making the Republicans more populist and more nationalist.
On the Democrat side, it’s a question of whether they become socialists and globalists.
This isn’t an old school attempt at “red baiting” and just calling someone a socialist as an insult, it’s a movement. The Democratic Socialists of America has found a home inside the Democrat Party and in someways is doing a takeover from the inside.
As I discuss with David Christopher Kaufman and J.D. Tuccille in this week’s episode of Full Comment, the question is how far the DSA can go.
They have very different aims that the traditional Democrats. Allowing the DSA to take control of the party and set the agenda would effectively kill off the party of JFK.
The problem is, that’s where the excitement is inside the party at the moment.
Oh, and as so many Canadians watch and wait for the midterm results thinking it will improve our trade with the United States, including our prime minister, here’s something you should know.
The DSA doesn’t like free trade and they want to rip up CUSMA.

The anti-Trump radicals storming the U.S. Congress are not our friends…
From the official show notes:
The U.S. midterm elections on November 3 are the first big chance for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to rewire the way the United States works, with dozens of endorsed candidates eager to seize on the unpopularity of President Donald Trump and Republicans. But if you’re exasperated by the disruption and instability of Trump, these radicals promise to be much worse, as Brian discusses with American journalists David Kaufman and J.D. Tuccille. With its anti-capitalist, anti-corporate dogma, the DSA distrusts free trade with Canada even more than the president does. It also wants to end military alliances, entirely rewrite the Constitution, and cut off all support for Israel. And, as our guests explain, these neo-revolutionaries have momentum on their side. Canada is already a socialist country after 11 years of Liberal Governments. Left ideology has taken control of our school boards, our judicial system and our Government. When Donald Trump got elected again I felt a breath of fresh air, that perhaps someone could turn this around for USA and ultimately for Canada. However, the left has become successful in developing a hatred for Trump that clouds all good thinking. And our Prime Minister has ulterior motives that are plane to me but onlyu a minority of Canadians.
Now that I've vented the question is how do we turn these 2 countries back toward centre and perhaps a lot to the right? Here in Canada, an election won't do it as Carney is famous at cheating the voting population. So what is the answer. I read all of the warnings but noone has come up with a solution.
Socialism is cool! It was just not done right in Cuba, Russia etc 🙄.
