The headlines suggest Trump is rejecting Canadian energy and fertilizer exports. The reality is more complicated, though his moves still help Putin and frustrate Ukraine.
Great leadership move by Trump, as usual. He should continue to ignore WEF clown Carney since Carney walked away from the trade deal after agreeing to it.
As per trade rep Greer, who is far more believable than the Carney blarney.
Canada's western provinces rely heavily on diesel to run heavy machinery for their agricultural product and then to transport those goods. Poilievre mentioned to Carney and the liberals that if all federal taxes were eliminated on diesel and gas eliminating there would 'relieve massive financial strain on farmers, truckers, and Canadian households'.
As usual Carney said no. Carney went on defend his record and rejected the idea that simply deleting a tax would solve Canada's structural affordability challenges.
The only angle cbc has left is to capitalize on the well promoted narrative that failure of Americans to purchase Canadian agricultural products is a betrayal of some obligation that they have .
Trump is an enigma, but a true patriot. Canada is being led by a clever man Carney but I do belive he put Canada 2nd to his own good, both Trump and Doug Ford spoke well of Carney during the election and in effect screwed Pierre Polliver and the conservative party here in Canada, I get Trump running off at the mouth , but Doug Ford was kissing his backside claiming they both agreed to the same things. Ford needs to to give his head a shake or cross the floor....
There is zero incentive for Trump to stop behaving the way he does. The MSM loses their collective minds, experts who didn't exist before Trump spoke come out of the wood work, and once again, Trump is in the news.
The only place Canada deserves at the world table is at the kiddy table.
Canada is run by morons more interested in their electoral fortunes than about governing the country to the benefit of Canadians.
Canada should have played a much bigger role in the current energy crisis but our leaders preferred to play politics and Canadians just went along because... big bad orange man.
Canada is not a serious country and no one around the world thinks we are either.
Useful idiot for sure but serious... not a chance.
This won't result in anymore diesel production, so it doesn't impact supply. Paradoxically, it could lead to slightly higher prices as diesel exported from Russia under sanctuons would have sold below market price due to the buyer assuming some risk. It sends the wrong message as it contradicts the secondary sanctions the US recently imposed on Russia. Trump has never been about consistency.
Thank You Mr. Lilley for attempting gradations of thought (shades of grey as it were) on this topic. In the world of the hyper vigilant attention deficit disordered media blitz on most subjects, there's not much room for nuance sliding down the public feeding tube.
In sum ? progress. Not that we can expect anything like progress out of any left wing sycophants. Remember that as Canadians are flushed down a carney toilet. Trump works for America.
grok :
“Zelenskyy’s 60-day proposal: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would organize elections (suspended under martial law since the 2022 invasion) if Russian President Vladimir Putin agrees to a 60-day total ceasefire. He framed this in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent criticism and calls for new leadership in Ukraine. It is a conditional offer from Zelenskyy, not a mutual agreement.
• Trump’s energy ceasefire claim: Separately, Trump posted on Truth Social that an “ENERGY CEASEFIRE” is “effective immediately,” stating both parties had agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy said the announcement was “news for me” and that Ukraine would support it if Russia also agrees, while awaiting details. There has been no immediate public confirmation from Moscow, and similar prior Trump announcements about energy pauses have not always held.
In short: The 60-day total ceasefire remains a proposal tied to elections, not a done deal. The only announcement today is Trump’s claim of a narrower energy-focused pause, which Kyiv has greeted with surprise and conditions rather than full confirmation. Situation remains fluid with limited official details from the parties involved.”
It’s a temporary fix to a political problem around the midterms. It also serves to slap in the face supposed allies who have done nothing or very little to resolve the Iran problem.
No one is Lilly white in geopolitics.
Ukraine and Zelensky have been and are incredibly corrupt and the CIA, and Deep State have their hands all over it, using it to try and impeach Trump in his first term and… since then.
Ukraine wouldn’t still be in the fight against Putin if not for President Trump - Biden and Obama handcuffed Ukraine in the war. So… temporary, can’t loose sight of the big picture geopolitical fight that is the real war against Communism and its flavours.
I wrote this some time ago, a good read. I respectfully offer it to you for your consideration.
What I would really appreciate is that when some people hear the word Trump, they would stop clutching their pearls and really try to think like an adult. Going all crazy and thinking that the sky is falling 'again' is not the best thought process. Stop for a moment and google something like ‘what is the reasoning behind Trump making a deal with Russia”. Generally, AI is pretty good at giving a fairly non-partisan answer. I asked Google not to get their information from CBC and AI acquiesced to my ask. Think out of the Carney or Trump box and sometimes even Carney and Trump moves can make sense – Carney less often.
The US "purchase" of Russian diesel fuel wouldn't support American demand for a day.
It's all theatre, and what is more alarming is how Trump is deliberately blaming the high costs of diesel to consumers in America on Ukraine.
Trump is staring at the US Primary numbers and has found a perfect foil for the high cost of US diesel. It's no secret that Ukraine is bombing Russian oil facilities, experts are thinking that production has been cut by half, but the real supply/demand problem has a direct line to Trumps disastrous war with Iran. Iran has choked off the oil supply chain and is using proxies to bomb neighbouring countries oil facilities. Cynical politics.
What are you talking about? Iran is not in control of the strait - the U.S. is & should remain in charge until the world confirms that the strait belongs to no one, especially Iran.
"Trump is buying Russian diesel and not Canadian, what a jerk."
I would like to point out he is free to do business with whoever he wants just as much as Canada is free to do business with whoever we want. In my opinion, Canada should do more business with China and Australia since those are expanding economies.
Back in 2000, the #1 global trading partner was the US. Today, the #1 global trading partner is China with over 120+ countries.
I interesting how the Elbows Up gang of Fools switches their position at the drop of a hat. All in on dumping trade with the US, and then P.O'd when the US buys a product from Russia instead of the Elbows Up gang.
Espousing distaste for most things American while craving its attention is core to the Laurentian identity. The Trudeaus, both Pierre and Justin, are embodiments.
Replying to both of you Dougs. I agree with your comments. Canada has no reason not to trade with China, but there are lots of reasons not to keep them in your bedroom - so to speak. Reading Sam Cooper's, The Bureau, should be mandatory reading for Canadians.

Elbows up!

Yup, the CBC has nailed it... Canada and Canadians are victims and the US is our enemy. /sarc

He never has been. It's part of his strategy that some people just don't get! Sad really...
Art of the Deal.... create a distraction

Trump has successfully jaw boned the energy market to date. This is more of the same

Selling raw materials to China is low risk
I don't really know anything about selling raw materials, but if you are thinking rare earth metals you have a good point.
I'm thinking oil, LNG, canola, potash. Canada is more likley to be buying rare earths than selling them to China.
