If you look online you will see plenty of Canadians posting about how our economy is adding more jobs than the United States. It’s true, we’ve added more jobs of late but this doesn’t mean we’re doing better than the United States.
This is just one example of the commentary out there, others take aim at MAGA or talk about Maple MAGA in Canada. They believe this is proof that the American economy is tanking.
Both Statistics Canada and the American Bureau of Labor Statistics released the latest jobs numbers on Friday. The United States added 50,000 jobs in December and their unemployment rate sits at 4.4% or measured the Canadian way about 5.2%. Across Canada, we added 8,200 jobs and the unemployment rate stands at 6.8%.
That hardly gives us bragging rights, we have a much higher unemployment rate!
On this point and many others, the American economy is outperforming the Canadian economy and all those Canadians - especially Canadian politicians - hoping for a crashing American economy to reverse Trump’s tariffs are going to be disappointed.
