Parliament returns, the King appears and what does it mean....
The House of Commons hasn't met in more than five months despite an apparent national crisis.
So today, the House of Commons will meet for the first time since December 17, 2024. For those with short memories, that was the day after Chrystia Freeland resigned as Justin Trudeau’s Finance Minister with a scorched earth public letter to the now former PM.
Freeland released her resignation letter at 9:07 AM to s schocked political world. She said that Trudeau was not taking the tariff threat from Donald Trump seriously and was squandering Canada’s ability to reply.
“We need to take that threat extremely seriously. That means keeping our fiscal powder dry today, so we have the reserves we may need for a coming tariff war. That means eschewing costly political gimmicks, which we can ill afford and which make Canadians doubt that we recognize the gravity of the moment,” Freeland said at the time.
Freeland’s knifing of Trudeau took us to this point
No one should forget that Freeland’s decision to metaphorically slide the knife between Trudeau’s ribs, taking him from the front rather than the back led us to where we are today. Yet, just as Brutus didn’t get to replace Julius Caesar, Freeland didn’t get to replace Justin Trudeau.
Which brings us to where we are today, Monday May 26, 2025.
The House of Commons will convene for the first time since December 17, 2024 or 161 days ago. If you were under the mistaken impression that we were in the middle of a crisis or had just gone through “one of the most consequential elections” of your lifetime, you might be wondering why the House hasn’t sat already and why they won’t sit longer.
As I explain in my most recent Toronto Sun column, the rhetoric and the action from Carney don’t match.
“If any of these claims made during the campaign were true, we’d have a budget before September or October and Parliament would be sitting into the summer. Instead, just like Carney’s ‘elbows up’ claims, it was all rhetoric to scare voters into backing the Liberals during the election.”
Now, we will see the pomp and pageantry of King Charles III opening Canada’s Parliament supposedly as a show of strength and sovereignty. Given the tenuous link so many Canadians have with the monarchy, I’m not sure that is how it will work out.
Your mileage may vary.
Watch for lots of coverage from me of the reopening of the House of Commons at the Toronto Sun, on X, on Facebook and elsewhere.
In other news……
I went to the Walk With Israel on Sunday.
Those who know me know that I am unwavering in my support of the Jewish Community in Canada and of the right for Israel to exist.
I had several social media posts on X, Facebook and Instagram about the walk and would encourage you to follow me on all or on your favourite social media platforms.
I just went to the Walk With Israel to show support but f you want coverage, look up what Warren Kinsella had to say.
I’ll say this about Kinsella, the old man can’t work his phone. He told be to text him when I got close to the walk and then went radio silent for hours. We were supposed to meet up and didn’t because he couldn’t work his phone.
Thankfully, Dr. David Jacobs was a fine host and we walked together. I only put on my shades for the photo to try and look cool, which may not have worked.
Lots more to say on the socials, so follow me there.
Columns you should be reading today…..
Well, beyond anything I’m writing, there are pieces worth checking out that don’t push the usual narrative.
Warren Kinsella writes on the fact that we don’t know who Mark Carney is or even what kind of government we will get from him.
“But Carney? He flaunts us, still. He remains an enigma wrapped in a riddle. He’s a mystery man.
What can we expect from the federal government? It’s stubbornly unclear.”
At National Post, Jamie Sarkonak has a fascinating column on a woman who is fighting back against woke ideology at the University of Western Ontario. It’s early days but give the piece a read and follow this case.
It’s a few days old but, Ben Shapiro has a great take on Joe Biden’s cover-up. The incredible attempt to convince the American people that Biden wasn’t in decline and filly in charge.
“Americans’ trust has been abused over and over and over again for the last decade. And it’s not enough simply to blame those who abused that trust. It’s time to rebuild systems that verify.”
That’s it for now, thanks for reading this inaugural newsletter. If you aren’t subscribed yet, please make sure you sign-up, it is free and please, share this with your friends.
So it's true. It's basically saying that democracy is just a title that's being used by the left to become a corrupt monarchy. How can you not go insane with this?
