It’s unfortunate that you didn’t pay more attention to what was happening at the Ostrich Farm in Edgewood, BC and the determination of the CFIA to cull/kill 300+ birds. It’s only been going on for 11 months. And more importantly since September when the Supreme Court issued a ‘stay’ so the judges could decide whether or not the Farm’s appeal would be heard. The Supreme Court announced today that they would not be hearing the appeal.

So CFIA now gets to kill the birds without testing to prove that the birds are sick.

Another government agency with no accountability.

Why can't they just test the effing birds?😡

No doubt CFIA refused to test because the entire world has seen how healthy the WELL-CARED FOR OSTRICHES ARE AND NONE OF THEM APPEAR TO BE SICK AT ALL AS THEY RUN AWAY TO TRY TO STAY ALIVE!!! THIS IS THE EPITOME OF OVERREACH BY THE GOVERNMENT. TIME TO GET RID OF SUCH A CRUEL AND EXTREMELY IDIOTIC LIBERAL GOVERNMENT. DISGUSTING!! INHUMANE - CRUELTY TO THESE BEAUTIFUL BIRDS SHOULD BE MET WITH A MILLION DOLLAR FINE TO BE PAID TO THE OSTRICH FARM, AND JAIL WITHOUT BAIL FOR ONE HE** OF A LONG TIME.

Yup, that’s exactly everyone has been asking for the CFIA to do for months now.

They tested the birds that died last December but refuse to test the birds that are alive.

I suspect that logic is not part of the CFIA mandate.

I’m surprised CFIA has not attempted to cull wild birds.

A debacle ironically brought you by a government with its head in the sand.

Budget ?

Back in real life Dempsters ancient grains bread is 4 dollars on sale.

Food inflation continues to rise.

Cloned meat is not required to be identified as such.

I spent a large amount of time in my business life having staff deal with cross border harmonized tariffs. Categorizing etc etc. importing into Canada ? A costly nightmare. Exporting to USA ? Much easier. Going back30-40 years some US companies would not ship to Canada. Still true. The paperwork is too onerous. To this day I keep US manufactured goods made to my design in a Ny state warehouse. It’s not economic to import them here , and then turn around and sell back to the USA. Which is by far the largest market.

Anyone who thinks and believes Liberals stroking Canadian egos with the policy of “ diversifying trade to Europe and beyond” to thus become “ less reliant on the USA” is clearly delusional. And frankly stupid.

America is great. Friendly. A superpower.

How has Canada gotten everything so wrong with our trade relationship?

It’s not Trump

No it’s not Trump. And what is worse, Trump has upset the globalist agenda and our PM is doubling down on failed policies, while the rest of the world is starting to realize maybe they were not a great idea. But you won’t hear that through our media.

It’s going to worse before it gets better.

"No, these ostriches are not going into the food supply, but their existence could harm other bird flocks in the area and spread the disease."

These perfectly healthy (ie recovered from bird flu) birds are no threat to anyone or thing in the Canada, let alone the small plot they live on. CFIA's actions can be equated to killing the remaining well and thriving patrons in the old folks home because a few of the frail got sick and died from pneumonia. CFIA crew are dumb and ignorant luddites. Shame on you Brian for succumbing to the rhetoric and not using your common sense. Next you'll be telling us the shots were safe and effective because you heard Ian Handsome-man-thing tell us such on TV

What a mess. Crooked and corrupt to the core, all of them. Liberal, Tory, same old story. Decades of this mess. No leadership anywhere. But why? Who runs the country, Ottawa? $ KEBEK $ Mass immigration, massive govt growth, debt...100s of billions stolen out of Alberta and Sask., BC, Ont. since the 1960s, 70s. Equalization (money laundering into kebec) Kebek steals over 50% EVERY SINGLE YEAR. This became entrenched in his commie charter = kebek communist Pierre Trudeaus constitution of 1982. Since then, 25 years of Liberal govts have made things worse. 18 years of 'Conservative' govts, the exact same thing. Kebeks Charter = 10s of billions stolen out of Ottawa yearly and funneled into quebec and other metis (they are not french) – towns and companies, all across the country every year, all disguised as grants, subsides, equalization, transfers, bilingualism (code for french) – only outside quebec while kebec bans our language, history = bills 22, 178, 101, 96. Multiculturalism (only outside kebec), massive government growth, control, censorship, surveillance, taxes and debt. Canada now just liberals masquerading as conservatives, the rest, communists masquerading as liberals. ’French power’ in all provinces. They are revising, eliminating our BNA history all over the country as they rename, remove all things English, Scottish. Election fraud? YES, guaranteed. Why? Simple, they lie about everything. Welcome to Marxist - commie Canada where your vote is meaningless. Why? Bigoted = Socialist = marixst = commie = kebec runs the nation. This IS the problem, and No party, NO ‘leader’ will touch it. ‘Cons’ Poliver, Ford ?...nothing, not a word. “First quebec, and Ottawa and then the entire country…” ‘french power..." PET. $ Seriously, how do we get these lying, crooked, corrupt greedy metis bigots out of Ottawa, Queens Park? We have no-one to vote for. Liberal, Tory, same old story. Stop all immigration now. Repeal the charter. Deport now. Kick kebek out = Fix Canada. Or break up Canada. HELP

Canadian FOOD Inspection Agency.

These ostrich have not been part of any human consumption since before the Plandemic. The supposed flu was detected with two PCR tests in Dec /24. BC health no longer uses PCR to detect virus in humans, deemed unreliable per B Henry. The scientists at CFOODIA refuse to test the healthy birds. There should be red flags for everyone when the FOOD bureaucrats can order the culling of healthy animals who are not destined for human consumption.

However, up to the cull order, the farm was following CFIA protocol as a biohazard facility.

Communism, they masked for it.

I have first hand experience with the fallout that happens when importing countries decide that Canada has food safety problems and close their borders to our live animals and meat products. The Canadian cattle industry is still struggling to regain some markets after a cow tested positive for BSE in May 2003. Millions of dollars of book value wiped out because of ONE cow. Now, in that instance CFIA didn't order a national, regional or local cull. For the most part it was managed by testing and observation, but the lessons learned were costly and the source of the problems dealt with.

So, I look at a few ostriches, novel species that are not native to Canada and can't believe the way that the owners of the birds were allowed to bob, weave and litigate their way into a special status that has never been granted to other animal owners with a herd health concern to the CFIA or its forerunners. The ostriches had a documented bird flu outbreak that killed some of the flock. Therefore in the national interest, CFIA is empowered to clean house and prevent the bird flu outbreak from spreading.

This is a battle of wits that CFIA can't afford to lose. If exemptions are made for a few ostriches then everyone and their dog will petition for mercy and tug at the heart strings of well intended but poorly informed people to assist them in defying the national interest and food safety principles.

Or prove that natural immunity is possible. And just possibly, humans living and working in close proximity to animals that survived an outbreak may just develop a natural form of resistance. Imagine what that would do to the constant drumbeat about the next pandemic will be caused by a bird flu mutation.

Poetry, and small or big minds aside, the stakes are high. A black swan event can come out of nowhere and not only devastate the national livestock inventory but could potentially cross over into humans and then what?

Citizens can't have it both ways. If they want to give some animals special privileges and keep them beyond the reach of food safety regulations then they also have to take ownership of a pandemic that arises from it.

The overarching national interest is for CFIA to protect the integrity and safety of our livestock and food production.

Lamentably, the conversation has gone down a rabbit hole of exceptionalism, that the ostriches are special and should be protected from the evil government. As a livestock producer, I am pleased to see the CFIA refusing to cut ANYBODY any slack and allow them to avoid liquidating their animals for specious reasons.

2 out of 69 dead birds tested positive with a PCR test- known for faultiness. CFIA has acted above the law, culling before the SCC ruling released today. The birds have been healthy for 10 months. They have antibodies for avian flu. Many are over 20 yrs old.. many many antibodies for various viruses. Killing them for no reason will affect our humanity and health. Therefore, in the national interest, it is essential that these animals remain alive, and that the CFIA and the RCMP that have been protecting the CFIA are held accountable.

In regard to the Ostriches: they are not exotic pets, or for food. They are used for research for human benefit like vaccine development. The birds have obviously developed immunity to the avian flu, so would be very valuable for research. This is a heavy handed tunnel vision decision by the Feds.
