This idea assumes we actually want a trade deal. I am not convinced our side favours that outcome.
1) unilaterally, unconditionally, remove all tariffs on the United States.
2) unilaterally & unconditionally dismantle Supply Management over a seven year phase in.
3) unilaterally & unconditionally, remove the protectionism on the airline, telco, and banking industries.
4) unilaterally & unconditionally agree to remove the remaining restrictions on American alcohol imports. Obviously, this requires Provincial consent, but Premier Ford & Prime Minister Carney are snuggle bunnies at the cottage, so this shouldn’t be difficult.
These suggestions cost us nothing.
These suggestions offer the Americans a win they can take to the American people in time for the midterms.
These suggestions force the Americans back on defence. They position us as good faith, free traders. The Americans can trumpet this as a win, and we get access to the largest trading market in the history of mankind.
Don, I like your suggestions because, oh my God!, they result in massive value for Canadians.
Eliminating tariffs means that various goods manufactured in the US instantly become cheaper in Canada.
Dismantling supply management means that products of those protected industries (dairy and poultry) will be available at reduced cost with greater variety to Canadians.
Opening up airline, telco, banking, etc. will result very quickly in lower prices and increased service.
Ah, but getting the provinces on board will be tough.
Now, having made all my points about how it is a wonderful idea, we know that the current LPC government will never do it because they believe above all in US = evil; any, any, any, any Canadian thingy is good.
Imagine the leverage Pierre Poilievre could have gained if he had staked a position in opposition to Supply Management.
Yes, it would have been controversial. Yes, it would have been a tough sell. Yes, he may have had to sacrifice some support in Quebec.
But he would have taken a position consistent with the rest of his platform, and had the opportunity to offer Canadians a contrast to the stifling economic oppression of the Carney Economic Model.
When the original USMCA was negotiated & signed, Canada almost got left out because Trudeau the Younger and Chrystia Freeloader were playing stoopid games.
King Carney got elected promising to be the "adult in the room" and has managed to make things worse. That's a bold strategy, Carney... let's see how it works out for what's left of Canada...
Carney seems hell bound to undermine Canada’s relationship with the USA. His entire platform regarding the US is “orange man” bad so let’s antagonize them at every turn. Unless Brookfield or a liberal friend were to profit of some kind of deal it seems he is not interested
Carney is too focused on doing trade with other countries who do little to no trade with Canada. He refuses to solve the trade war with the US. The best way to get free trade is to get rid of supply management and our ridiculous tariffs on US dairy. That would benefit both Americans and Canadians by making our prices cheaper. We should sign an agreement to get rid of all tariffs on either side of the border.
I agree the dairy cartel must go, I, too, believe Carney is fiddling around and biding his time not for the next presidency but because he's part of the WEF/UN/IMF/World Bank reset. He needs to get Canada in more debt first then, once we fall, all the other dominoes fall in to place leaving the USA behind. Then they will fall.
How else to bring in Carney's Inclusive Capitalism initiative than for the country to fail? We are de-industrializing, like Europe (in the name of net zero), and, also like Europe, piling up debt. I don't like the American tariffs but I understand why Trump is employing the strategy - it's to get the country out of debt. Carney has no such goal. He wants to change the entire system.
How on earth did we get HERE? After 11 years of ideological policies and catering to Quebec we're in limbo because our PM wants an alliance with Europe over the USA. This is totally the WEF/UN/Trudeau/Carney fiasco that never ends and I for one place the blame squarely on Carney for his elitist and globalist goals and purposeful direction at the expense of Canada. He has shown through his handling of the Bank of England, his participation with the WEF as a board member, and being handpicked by the UN to be their UN special envoy for Net zero emissions to put everyone else over Canada. Shameful it's actually treasonous in my opinion.
I firmly believe in the start it was the Liberal Party of Canada calling the shots. They only see power and opportunity to grift the economy as they try to abstain from any real negotiation. Carney is a smart man and could get this settled… so why doesn’t he. Maybe he’s seeing Power and opportunity, just like his handlers..
This plays into a broader realignment happening globally. The countries figuring out how to position themselves within the new US-led economic order are going to come out ahead. Canada, with all its energy and mineral assets, should be a major player in this new order, but we're not acting like it.

I hate to say it but Canada has lost its way. The elbows up crowd has no common sense. The liberal nonsense has invaded every aspect of our lives. Everyone wants a handout. Everyone looks to the government to save them. It should be the opposite. The government should be there for the worst of times if god forbid terrible things happen. I see people wanting to get ‘disability leave’ off work. They are all trying to game the system. My friend in charge of HR said that one of her employees broke her pinkie toe and put in for 6 weeks leave and was furious when the doctor wouldn’t sign off on it. This is it now. This is the demise of Canada because more people are like that than not. Fewer people want to work and build things and if they do - they do not want to do it here.
I think I may have made this point before in this forum but to understand what Carney is doing we need to understand the various factors that motivate him. I believe, based on his recent work history that he is absolutely committed to driving up the legislated cost of carbon as his preferred vehicle to force the Canada and eventually the world to abandon fossil fuels in favor of non emitting sources of energy. His personal reputation and his family’s wealth are tightly linked to achieving this. Similar incentives exist for high level members of the Quebec caucus. Canadians could perhaps be expected to accept the economic sacrifices involved if the rest of the world was heading in the same direction. There’s no way however that Canadians could accept the economic burden of a net-zero economy while in an open trade relationship with the U.S. that imposes no such burden on their industries. That’s why, I believe, free trade with the U.S. is not something Carney can enthused about.
It isn't hard to find articles written by pretty smart American observers of the Trump administration that think the Trump "era" is about to collapse on itself. The President's declining general health combined with a volatile mental state can't be far away from derailing into an unfitness for office problem.
It seems as though the Canadian strategy is to rag the puck and wait for the pressures of office and the daily barrage of bad news push the Trump administration into a mid terms election corner and a badly needed retirement.
Is the next one up any better? I suppose the redeeming quality of any replacement for Trump will be certainty of policy course that doesn't change by the hour.
I know i should be more concerned about our deal with the us, but hey they aren't.. as i read today Carney can not negotiate alot of deals because hes involved with so many companies as their board of directors or what ever.
Hes a PM in name only, as i see it.
It's easy to sit back and act all powerful and confident like Hogstern does because Trump backs him.
Im betting on Trump being gone soon. The senate did not back his big payday for Iran. Hes probably a really nice man, but a lousy deal maker.. inconsistent.
I guess we should be making some kind of offer, we have a team there.. hope they do.
Who knows we might be surprised. July 1st..its Canada's Day isn't it. ?
Your probably right on all this, but im sick of Trump. He cant leave soon enough.
The liberals are just going to wait a few more years for Trump to leave office. If Canada starves or collapses so be it. Carney will just board his corporate jet and return to Europe where he lived before becoming PM

Sadly, Ken, I tend to agree.

It’s part of the globalist new world order agenda.

And why are Canadians still supporting the liberals. Seriously! Are they that blind, stupid or both?
