What a great idea. When we go out to restaurants lately, my family and friends are often upset when they request a favourite California wine to find out it can’t be served in Ontario restaurants. We used to support Ford, but no more. He has become both a bully and a not-so-bright clown. He has never heard of taking the high road, like most bullies.

I appreciate the effort that Mr. Lilley makes to understand the frustrations of western Canadian canola producers but he misses the target by a Toronto mile.

Canola is a food commodity traded on futures markets and farm operations move the commodity into the trade through a combination of futures contracts, sales contracts and basis pricing at grain terminals. In the grand scheme of things, canola, canola meal and canola oil move within normalized trade agreements and are not directly subsidized sales.

ALL of the recent trade battles with China over canola are framed within political manoeuvres that China is using to manipulate policy and politics in Canada. It's all fine and well to stand up for the Canadian auto industry and an EV production line that only exists in Liberal minds, but the collateral damage is significant, wiping millions of dollars worth of equity from the balance sheets of farmers all across the Prairies. That's real money and market opportunity lost through political issues beyond the reach of farmers to fix.

To date, the Liberals have been doing a splendid job at nothing. In fact the normal Liberal talking heads don't even want to talk about canola because they know that automobiles will always come first, regardless of the consequences.

That's our Canada.

Totally agree. I'm usually in agreement with Lilly but it's way out of line to say that China is a bad actor so just go and find another market. I'm no expert in canola marketing but I suspect we can't just go and "find another buyer" without a significant sacrifice on price assuming it's even possible. Should B.C. find another market for its coal because China is bad? I thought the switch to EV'S was driven by the drive to fight global warming not to create an industry in Ontario that doesn't currently exist. If global warming was the concern we should be grateful to China if their willing provide the world with EV's at a loss. This is a clear case of harming one region for the benefit another.

Thanks for all the info. Much appreciated. On another, somewhat related topic - again about Ford - he's been bashing the grocery stores who sell booze but now don't want to deal with empties and returns. My question is why doesn't the LCBO become the primary vehicle for the return of empties? The have a monopoly on hard liquor sales and are found all across the province. Rather than spend millions on producing a glossy magazine maybe spend that money and set up a bottle and can recycling program.

Marg's avatar

Are they actually recycling?

Ford is acting like spoiled king.

His decisions are personal and petty. They have nothing to do with the interests of Ontarians.

I bet $100, the bottle of whisky was put on someone's expense account - paid for the the Ontario government, paid for my the Ontario taxpayers.

Let's literally, pour money down the drain.

He need to be deposed ASAP.

I enjoy your writing and full comment podcasts. Congratulations on being objective , and having different perspectives.

On your podcast with Solomon you mentioned you would raise the question to Premier Ford , on the policy that the crown has and it should be changed. Changing the policy may result in less prosecution for home owners defending themselves family and property.

I am URGING you to do so at the most appropriate and earliest opportunity

God Bless

Fun read.. congrats on the 2nd place.. pretty good.

Flood the market with Evs. Like they do with all their other cheap products.. hard to buy anything not made in China.. glad the cars are on hold.

The castle law .hope to listen.. to the podcast. But yes, where do we draw the lines..if thry dont want to get hurt..dont rob a home.. simple..but

Doug Fords mantra is for the people. If he said nothing they would complain.

200 people lost their jobs restructuring or not.. that's hard! Jmo

I have a soft spot for Betty and her 1950's vintage Chev and GMC light duty trucks.

My Mom and Dad drove a '50 Chev 1/2 ton when they were first married, and as a young couple it had to make do until funds would permit having a car and a truck. Their truck was the same colour as Betty and we have the pictures to prove it. I wish my Dad was still alive to show him Betty...it would have put a smile in his heart.

I listened to much of the lengthy discussion and thought that your friend, Solomon Friedman, needs to advise our AG Sean Fraser, who said that Canada is not the Wild West. Fraser is as close to being an imbecile as Ford is to being a bully. They both lack much-needed and more substantial legal minds with a greater sense of urgency about Canadians as people worthy of respect and who have inherent rights, often debatable in this country.

Love the truck! Congratulations to you wife and FIL!!

I somewhat disagree with not lifting the ban in Chinese EV's.

Not too many people can afford an unreliable EV, the insurance on an EV or pretend that there is a market for a used EV.

As for Chinese spying on the EV, if you own a Dodge Ram, the are countless folks out there writing great tunes that get rid of the emission controls, give you far greater gas mileage and help with transmission issues.

Give those folks a few months and the Chinese EV will not be a spy machine and the vehicle will run far better.

I find it amazing that you can write so many words yet make zero sense.

mari's avatar

Actually..he is not completely wrong. Something everyone has forgotten..the English side won the battle and the French were allowed to live their language and culture..here we are ..allowing the French province to run Canada and suck up it's resources and get paid by the other hard working provinces and not allow Canadian infrastructure to cross its land. Thanks Pierre Trudeau et al

I wish doctors would understand this. Many elders are on statins, depriving their brains of much-needed cholesterol and killing them with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease .

Marg's avatar

Well statins are a great money maker tho!

mari's avatar

💯. It is obvious that you guard your health...did you also know that individuals who take cholesterol lowering pharma are at great risk to develop dementia? Again..the brain is made up of cholesterol..what would they think would happen if cholesterol was removed..
