Canada works best when rules make sense, but a growing provincial patchwork creates needless confusion. Today, depending on their postal code, adult Canadians face conflicting regulations and uneven access to legal smoke-free alternatives. The goal isn’t more rules — it’s better rules. Federal and provincial leaders must work together to establish one clear, consistent national framework that protects those underage, strengthens enforcement, and supports informed adult choice.
Join us for our election night livestream…
Before we get into today’s news, let me preview Monday’s news and the really big show we are putting on for the Toronto election.
We’ll be doing a livestream as Toronto votes on Monday night, with me hosting.
This won’t be boring old TV election coverage that makes you want to poke your eye out with a rusty fork. We will have sharp analysis, common sense, and strong opinions.
I’ll share details when I’ve got more of this nailed down, but the plan is to stream across multiple platforms, including YouTube, X, Facebook, and more. If you have the right set-up, you can even watch on your TV.
There is municipal voting across Ontario on Monday and, given that I live in Toronto and write for the Toronto Sun, I’ll be focused on the mayoral race there. We have Olivia Chow, carrying the orange NDP banner, facing off against Brad Bradford, who just represents common sense and decency.
Chow and her allies have tried to paint Bradford as right-wing, even far right, and he’s not even a conservative. He does have a lot of good policies, though, and he rejects the failed policies of Chow and her NDP minions at city hall.
I’ve known Chow for about 20 years. She’s a nice person, but she’s just not up to the job. Bradford is someone I met after moving back to Toronto in 2019, and he’s an impressive guy, in politics for the right reasons and someone I think can do the job.
Voting closes at 8 p.m. ET. Results will come in just after that, so make sure you plan to watch.
Carney really seems to have lost his elbows…
I broke a story this week that has to be making some Liberal MPs a little uncomfortable.
The Carney government is taking the contract that the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires has held since 2012 to provide security at Canada Revenue Agency buildings and giving it to an American company. Beyond that, this is an American company that makes a fortune off providing security services to the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security and specifically its ICE deportation operations.
Doesn’t sound very “Elbows Up” now, does it?
From my column:
“So far in 2026, Allied Universal has received contracts worth more than US$290 million through the American Department of Homeland Security. Its subsidiary, G4S Security has received contracts worth US$83 million from ICE, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency that has been central to Trump’s mass deportation efforts.”
Conservative MP and veterans critic Michael Barrett asked about this issue at the start of Question Period on Tuesday and, remarkably, Liberal MP Wayne Long stood up to defend it.
I’m not someone who thinks we should cut off the Americans or even that we are at war with them. That said, I’m not the guy going around talking about elbows up, saying we will be our own best customer and that we can give ourselves more than the Americans can take away from us.
That would be the guy who just took the contract from Canadian vets and handed it to an American security giant.
Do read the column and share it if you can. This story is important.
Wedgewood Polling isn’t going to help the industry’s reputation…
Lots of people think all polls are fake, especially if they don’t like the results.
I don’t think that way about polls. Not all of them, anyway. This story, though, about Wedgewood Polling is going to make defending the industry harder.
The real problem, though, is the willingness of media outlets to publish something that was of no value, thereby giving it value.
On Tuesday night, just before a story was about to break on Wedgewood, the company posted to social media to tell the world that it is a fake polling company.
“How easy is it for an entirely fabricated polling firm to gain traction, be taken seriously, and expose how little scrutinization exists in media and in public commentary?”
“The short answer: Far too easy.”
These fake polls where picked up by the New York Times, MSNOW, among many others. They were picked up by polling aggregators who put out polling averages.
So the question is, did they change the way the race looked? Nate Silver is a widely respected polling aggregator who was fooled into using these polls, here’s what he posted regarding the impact.
Here’s my commentary on this story.

There really is no story here; Mark Carney is famous for expecting others to do one thing, while he does another.
Anyone who is fooled by the Diminutive Diva of Davos is merely naive, or tragically misinformed .
I understand he also gave the airport security to Allied. Pretty sad. I’ve written to Carney, Smith and my MP. Maybe with enough noise he might change his mind but I’m not hopeful. It is part of his mission to destroy Canada and he hates the military so there’s that.
