I've seen that series of maps, too. The areas attributed to Palestine (before such a notion even existed) were mostly arid lands inhabited only sporadically by nomadic Bedouin. The Jews expanded through irrigation and later desalination plants. Arabs were attracted by the Jewish success and also settled there.
