Brian,

This is in response to your comments in todays email, which btw, I understand.

I'm a 71 year old retiree in Pembroke Ontario. Back in my young Toronto days I read the 'Tely' and was a Sun reader from day one. I can remember as a teenager, pining pictures from the paper on my bedroom wall.

I don't get the Sun anymore and really don't care for Ottawa or the Ottawa Sun either, how can anyone buy a paper that has their stupid hockey team on the front page 5 days out of 7 in a week.

What I wanted to say to you was this. Here's one old guy that has followed you from the beginning and trusts you. No you are not wrong but you must understand one thing. "Convince a fool against their will and you still have a fool."

We elected an idiot after Steven Harper and have continued down the road to destroying what was once a great country, as if we are lemmings jumping off a cliff. All the signals about Carney were there just like a sign saying 'The Bridge Is Out', all the Canadian cityfolk, easterners and progressive could see was the roadrunner painting the picture of the bridge in the middle of the road.

No Brian, you are not a traitor, you are a voice of reason.I get it. I'd like to shake my fist at the Americans too. I'm retired, it won't affect me, it will affect my children and grandchildren though, they still have to work.

Please stay the course as I know you will, history will prove you right.

Robert Leonard CD

I fully agree with Robert and I am the same age. I am very concerned about the horrendous debt and expensive price of everything for the next generations.

Carney is just like Trudeau, lots of talk and lots of $$ being spent, but things are getting worse. And don’t get me going about Eby and his spending here in BC.

I don’t understand the boomers and their support for Carney and Eby… can’t they see that this spending is bankrupting Canada?

It would appear that the vast majority of Canadians were sheep during Covid, learned nothing and continue to bleat, “Lock us down, daddy.” They deserve PM Carnage. Too bad it’s our kids and grandkids that will pay.

Regarding Israel, yes it has the right to fight Hamas but what is being done to the Palestinians is genocide.

"Keep Canadians safe" was the oft repeated mantra during the COVID times. Monger the fear, and then overreach all you want. Still working like a charm.

I laugh at the boomers in your letters saying “support Carney like all Canadians do”. These old eastern fools still actually think everyone thinks as they do, with their elbows up ready to kiss the ring of the new “leader”. Once again it shows how blind and ignorant they are to the rest of Canadians concerns. Next election please go and play bingo or go to your book club but please don’t vote. Canada needs you to stop pulling us all down.

And the Nova Scotia thing is just ludicrous.

These are two examples why Alberta should separate. There’s no way to work with people who are so blind to reality.

I was on the U.S. West Coast last week. A number of Americans wanted me to know that they felt that Trump was being too hard on Canada. I know they have good hearts and meant well. But it felt like being told that the boss is being too hard on a fundamentally stupid employee. Brian is likely right in thinking that Mark Carney isn't the right negotiator for the trade job.

Let's not overlook the fact that people retired on a good income (I believe they are often cited as Carney supporters) can insulate themselves from decline. They may care less about it than we might have hoped.

I feel very upset about the Nova Scotia ban. It definitely causes me to want out of this country. It seems they want a big brother total surveillance, total control society. If Atlantic Canada is this complacent and compliant I want out. I hope the rest of Alberta agrees with me.

Throughout human history the majority of us want to be led. We want others to do the thinking for us. In return we give them our undying support. This is particularly obvious during times of conflict. Leave it to our leaders to guide us.

As recently as during COVID Prime Minister Trudeau had our backs, clearly legislating what we may and may not do. Now during what is apparently a war with the United States, Mark Carney is rallying the troops by making it clear that we are living in "the greatest crisis of our lifetimes", and only he can lead us through because only he knows how the world works. Wake up Brian, get with the program. Follow, do not question. No critical thinking allowed. It makes those who are blindly following uncomfortable.

I really hope you wrote this with shovel fulls of sarcasm. The only part of our backs that TruDope or Carney have is the part they are sticking the dagger in. I am quite capable of thinking for myself and will never give that over to some clown using his new position to do nothing more than enrich himself and his crony friends at Canadian taxpayers expense.

Lilley is right in terms of so many Canadians bowing to government 'orders' that are a clear infringement on constitutional rights. Unfortunately much of the fault in this regard lies with most mainstream media who go out of their way to justify such government actions, like they vehemently did with COVID. That's one of the reason that after the Freedom Convoy was dismantled in Ottawa when Trudeau illegally invoked the Emergencies Act, some 60% of Canadians agreed with what he did -- astonishing given that the government without a court order froze banks accounts of over 200 people, no one seemed to blink an eye. This was largely because a highly coordinated media hit job on the Convoy.

Now in looking at comments on m FB where people are criticizing Houston for his draconian no walking in the woods edict, I see Nova Scotians defending it, saying it is no big deal people can still go to the beach or the parks etc. They simply don't seem to understand what those of us who do.... and that is the creeping of government and the nanny state further into the lives of Canadians. The message is clear -- government's believe, not just a few, but the majority of Canadians are simply idiots who can't responsibly do anything themselves without risking their own safety or the safety of others and it's a slippery slope. That was something that many said about Medical Assistance in Dying, that it was a slippery slope and look where we have slide... extending it to the mentally ill, terminally ill children, and veterans with PTSD being offered it by Veteran Affairs, and patients having cancer treatments or surgeries asking if they would prefer the option of MAiD.

So much to unpack in this column. It continues to amaze me that our governments, courts, and law enforcement in Canada can quickly impose more restrictions that violate our rights and freedoms, fine someone $28,000 for walking in the woods, yet we can’t seem to make any meaningful impact on the fentanyl and other dangerous substances killing 1000s of Canadians coast to coast in every city, town and provinces. 🤔

Brian, I am also a retired “boomer” and beyond disgusted with what is happening in Canada. Lately I decided to read some of the “elbows up” people’s feeds, and the letters you received are mild. ANY criticism or opposition to Mark Carney, and or support for anything other than the Liberal government, is viewed as high treason, maple MAGA, and supporting the awful orange man south of the border, who is like the guy with the little mustache. (Their words - not mine) The level of hatred and anger is becoming scary, and I don’t scare easily. Tune into CTV, CBC for 10-15 minutes (14 mins longer than I can tolerate the propaganda), and it’s not surprising that people are losing their minds. I’m willing to bet my generous CPP benefit that a large majority of these angry haters, display “Hate has no home here” signs on their front lawns. Oh Canada 🇨🇦 what have we done? 😢

I am a senior, I did not vote for Carney, when he got elected I thought "well let's give him a chance to walk the walk, he did talk the talk". Now I am not sure he can do it. More trade with countries other than the States is great but that alone won't get us out of this debacle.

The emails you have received are tinged with a strange sense of fear.

They have a common theme

“…..you better start supporting our only hope, Mark Carney….”

This is not rational thinking this is cult mentality, they would appoint Carney as “supreme leader” for life if they could.

There is a weird “govern me harder big daddy Carney” vibe.

Speaking as a 60 year old retiree that freaks the shit out of me when I think how these “Carnites” are going to act when the next “crisis” is announced

If covid times taught us anything, the majority of the population loves to be told what to do (and how to think). You are correct, other than a few people with "unacceptable views", the majority of Nova Scotians will go along with the government overreach. And many of those will be happy to tattle on others who break this "law".

The Canadians who just want to be taken care of by an authoritarian government - which may or may not be making sense or have the public welfare at heart - don't seem to understand one important thing: We can't simultaneously have Big Brother and good government. At least they have simplified the landscape by choosing Big Brother.

The Nova Scotia ban on hiking and use of the forests is excessive as are the fines which are ridiculous. I understand the politicians of NS and their tendency to over react to almost everything as they live in a cloistered world and rarely experience our life. Premier Houston did say that people could still use trails to go to the lake for fishing, and we can still camp in campgrounds. People are careless and stupid when it comes to forests and their flammability, as I know from 13 years in the forest service. I've seen dozens of smouldering campfires and seen people throw cigarette butts out the window of their vehicles. There is a real danger of setting the woods on fire, but too many people fail to recognize the risks. If they have consulted with the officers of the Forest service, and they think a complete shutdown is the answer, then I won't argue the point, the FS people spend their lives out there and know the hazards. But I suspect this heavy-handed ruling came with no consultation with FS officials and is simply thuggish.
