Carney does not want a deal with the US. He especially loves to villify Trump. The reason for this is because he can compare Poilievre to Trump. His main talking point, and the one that helped him get elected. This, even though it has been shown he is worse than his predecessor Trudeau.
As far as the contents of the post, Mr Lily is correct. We do NEED a trade agreement with the US. This will now be more difficult due to the antics of Carney., not anything that Trump has done.
A question to ask is, why have other countries ( many of them) been able to come to a trade deal with the US but not Canada? If this is thought out the only logical conclusion is that the impediment is Carney, not the US team.
He loves to vilify? Pray do tell, where have you seen vilification of the US President by our Priminister.. Possibly Only In your mind.
Secondly, and probably of much greater importance, is that you have to face the fact there is no deal to be had. NONE. The sooner that Mr Lilley, yourself, and others who think that signing a deal is the answer, stop dreaming. May I remind all of you, the person that you propose to sign the “new” aggrement with , with such urgency, such desperation, that person has already torn up Two previous aggrements. The Original NAFTA and Mr Trumps CUSMA The Greatest Deal Ever.
How do you know there would be no deal? I mean, it;s not like we are trying very hard. Face to face meetings, not phone calls is the answer.
As for vilifying Trump, every time he makes a speech overseas, that is exactly what he does. I honestly believe that Carney, along with the rest of the Liberals, think the only source of news consumed by Canadians is our own. They say one thing here but the message changes when they are overseas.
It is amazing you refuse to see anything but your point of view. Again, other nations made trade deals with the US. Carney did not want to make a deal. This was obvious. He had NO issue moving Brookfield down to the US so I guess he felt Trump wasn’t bad for that company.
Trade deals have a lifetime. Things change and deals are reworked. This is called business.
I try to stay open minded on most topics, save Antisemites, Transchildren being butchered by mad doctors and Communists. My position on this topic developed from a completely different direction than most people on Substack and for that matter, I would dare say most Canadians and Americans. I spent a good part of my life being married to someone who worked at the UN. Spanning a period of thirty two years, my wife was intimately involved with negotiations and aggrements that were implemented by the UN. From Vienna, to Rio and more.
In those thirty plus years I had the privilege of becoming close with many diplomats from all over the world, Australian, the UK, Americans, French, Russian.
Our time spent at Dinners, Dinner parties, diplomatic events, socializing, opened up a new world to me, whiskey and wine makes for interesting conversations. One of my closest friends at the UN was a good old boy, military man from Maryland, on a freezing winter night , polishing off a bottle of Macallan , he explained to me how Americans " negotiate".
So my question to you is as follows. Have you any experience with any of the topics that are not being negotiated.
So who has the closed mind? I assure you it is not me.
PM Carney and his Liberal government have little interest in making a deal with the U.S. A trade deal would shine a light on Canada’s poor performing economy and take away the Elbowzos go to excuse. Interesting that we already have trade deals with 45 other countries, but Carney keeps flying around the world pretending that he is opening new markets for Canada. The Liberal majority in the spring election that will soon be announced will be the final blow to our country.
Canada is way too cozy with China; the foreign interference, the money laundering, the drugs. We have not been a reliable member of the 5 eyes group and it has been noticed. We refused to deal with our own problems and so the tariff fence went up. Trump has 3 years left to get the U.S. in a strategic position of strength to deal with the CCP. You think you can move into Venezuela....boom....you think you can settle in Panama....boom.....you want to ignore Russia and China moving into the Arctic....boom, Greenland you're on deck.......Mexico....boom, deal with the cartels.....Iran....boom you can't have a nuke 'cause you'll use it. Trump is a gangster dealing with the gangsters of the world. It's gunfight time at the OK Corral.....Canada has to deal with the rot from within.
If Canada continues to complain and whine instead of negotiate and looses CUSMA it will be a disaster for those who work for a living. Sure it will be a great elbows up moment to stand firm but a pyrrhic victory none the less.
Have we even tried to negotiate? I don't remember much discussion of why trade talks failed repeatedly last summer.
Smith negotiated tariffs on O&G down to 10% and that has lasted a year. Maybe Carney should emphasize that both countries profit from trade, and that it will take years to onshore Canada's exports to the US.
I too keep saying Carney doesn't want a deal for Canada. He wants everyone to keep thinking orange man bad and only he can save Canada. He thinks that will get him his majority.
Most of the world has learned to deal with Trump. You distract him, give him something he covets so he can call it a win, negotiate something for your country and move on.
Carney doesn’t want a deal, he needs Trump unstable and grumpy to keep the elbows up brigade good and scared. Carney isn’t thinking about Canadians, he’s thinking about Carney & friends imo.
The democrats have taken a stand as have 6 republicans. Trump is very well liked and he knows it..some put up with his maffia ways because of that..jmo
His popularity on policies is down with the Americans. Thats not looking too good for the primaries. My reason for thinking he wont block them. But never say never...
Trump reminds me of a never ending hurricane.. trying to stay afloat while living.. its tough!
Disagree. Democrats are aligned with federal Liberals/NDP/Bloc/Green. They will do anything to try and keep Conservative government out of Canada. Canadians will vote for Conservative because we need help in every area. Mr Trump is a business man. If our leaders stopped negotiating through media, we would see a better deal with America. Love you Mr Lilly but think you git this wrong
For the sake of Clarity look up the definition of Vilify. It is synonymous with disparage denigrate defame, which by your response one could say that statement makes you deluded.
Now, it has been made perfectly clear by the US President that there are NO negotiations to take place. The US has a strategy, and you and I are not part of it.
( negotiations). Unless you have had any experience in negotiating aggrements with regards to the US in a domestic or in an international capacity, as a foreign emissary, I highly recommend watching, reading and learning.

Best of luck to you with that strategy.

And for the record I am a Conservative.
Of course Trump will make a deal. Question is will Carney?
Define Deal
PM Carney and his Liberal government have little interest in making a deal with the U.S. A trade deal would shine a light on Canada’s poor performing economy and take away the Elbowzos go to excuse. Interesting that we already have trade deals with 45 other countries, but Carney keeps flying around the world pretending that he is opening new markets for Canada. Carney announces trade deals in the Canadian media but admits they are MOUs when abroad.
Similar to his MOU with we in Alberta: all agreement to discuss, agreement to consider, agreement to agree and so forth.
That much ballyhooed MOU with Alberta is just window dressing and will not produce much of anything substantive.
Canada is way too cozy with China; the foreign interference, the money laundering, the drugs. We have not been a reliable member of the 5 eyes group and it has been noticed. Exactly! The WEF is full of scum who hung out with Epstein and want to treat all us little people like slaves.
If Canada continues to complain and whine instead of negotiate and looses CUSMA it will be a disaster for those who work for a living. Sure it will be a great elbows up moment to stand firm but a pyrrhic victory none the less.
I really don’t think Carney wants a deal. He wants to hold Trump over Canada so he can get a majority in the next election. What a sham!
Well said, Brian.
Have we even tried to negotiate? I don't remember much discussion of why trade talks failed repeatedly last summer.

I wrote a 13xBrief Deck on CUSMA/ USMCA that explains the problem that Canada faces in the upcoming review. I think you would find it helpful.
Most of the world has learned to deal with Trump. You distract him, give him something he covets so he can call it a win, negotiate something for your country and move on.

The only reason the tariffs still exist is because of Carney and all the Self Righteous Smug Pathetic Canadians that support the Liberals and NDP !
