Parents were asking for help. The perverted school board should be all fired. There is no comparison between a novel and a comic book. Premier Smith is right and the school board are being immature with their response
If anybody should be fired it is the Education Minister. You know, actions have consequences. You screwed up - you need to apologize and go away.
When you set stupid criteria you get appropriate response. Alberta will have the great distinction to ban books by our best authors, likeMargaret Atwood. And we became laughing stock for the rest of the country as real country bumpkins.
Andrezej. Why are you defending gay porn? Obviously the School Board wasn’t taking out 1984 trying to comply with the rules. They were trying to obscure the porn they had allowed in.
I’m not defending anybody. I’m defending access to literature. The Minister set up criteria and the Board followed with titles matching his criteria.
In case you haven’t notice sex is a fairly important part of life. Like food. Like sleep.
Because it is important, we talk about, describe it in books. It is a part of great literature.
Books I mentioned don’t promote anything. They describe lives and, yes, there is some marginal sex in them. But don’t confuse content of these books with content of services like Pornhub. (By the way, porn services - including gay ones are just a click away on kids smartphones. Much more available than library books, don’t you think?)
Make no mistake, this is not about protecting minors from bad influences, this is about control of the population. And do you really think the elected official has more knowledge about what books a school library should have that trained professionals (with advanced degrees in this field) have?
You make no sense. This was not a complaint about wording of a law. None of those books were to be removed and you know it. You want gay sex graphic novels available for children. We who have kids and grandchildren don’t.
I feel sorry for Smith. She is trying to do the right thing by our children. She is protecting them from pornography but the leftist agenda is so strong in education that they don’t care about what is appropriate for children.
Seriously what’s up with the left’s obsession with showing kids pornography and teaching them sexual techniques?.?Don’t tell me the motivation is not nefarious.
Child predation is a disgusting well documented occurrence within male dominated ,all male organizations such as the priesthood and even the Boy Scouts as an example We could point at a whole array of reasons why this perversion and sexual abuse happens ,why predators are attracted to or develop within such organizations, totally irrelevant to this topic and indefensible to any reasonable person. The exposure of minor children to graphic pictorial instruction on sex acts by educators can serve only one purpose and that is to desensitize them to the acts as part of a grooming process and to accept sex outside of a healthy loving relationship .Any teacher ,school board member or person such as yourself that promotes or defends the indefensible should not be anywhere near minor children and their education.
Well, in another post I quoted one of articles where author described finding four (4) offending books in the library. I don’t know if it was a library system, single library, or libraries in the entire province.
Admittedly I also don’t know how the school library works. Is it open only when a librarian is present? Do kids have free access to stacks and pull whatever they wish from the shelf?
Does a teacher send students to pick specific titles?
No matter how it is organized, I very much doubt that Jonnie and Mary go there to find desensitizing materials. They have ample opportunity to find much, much, much easier on the internet or even good old TV.
I’m not sure what exact purpose this stupid affair whipped by our premier was supposed to serve. As of today, the minister suspended the witch hunt perhaps because Alberta has become a laughingstock for Canada and internationally.
By the way - you are right in the first part of your post. The predators need to be identified and removed from organizations serving kids, churches, etc. I just do not believe banning books is the proper way to accomplish anything. Amen.
You are right, it is directed at our not very smart government. Did you see Margaret Atwood’s short story in response to having her book banned? It is hilarious!
It’s also directed at our population who have voted for these clowns 4 times and decided to act like a bunch of toddlers, trashing the USA ,booing anthems ,boycotting US products ( not YouTube ,Facebook,Amazon etc mind you ) further crashing their own economy with “ elbows up “ .
Yes I read Ms. Atwood’s little blurb on having her book banned although I found it as boring as I did her book back in high school. The school board should not have banned her a Canadian author for indecency .
Actually, the right is much more inclined to be obsessed with all sex-related topics. Especially the most conservative part of them - the clergy. Oh, I have read quite a few of the books to be banned. None of the them taught me “sexual technics” . Not Handmaid’s Tale, not Great Gatsby, not 1984. What on Earth were you reading?
Please defend having the images in Genderqueer available to children. If you came over to my house with that book to show to my child I'd call the police.
Since I’m a curious cat I checked the book you mentioned. I’m not sure what in it is offensive to you. It deals with real life issues- many kids have problems like the main character. But rest assured that I’m not going to visit your house with the book under my arm. I’m not interested in meeting you and the topics of the book are outside of my interests for at least 50 years. But I can see that the book may be very helpful to the teenagers.
You don't need a book to teach what is a problem that arrises only in your home!! If you want to teach them these subjects...there is always the public library. These books that I have seen were graphic and pornographic...this book you speak of is of a subject not all children need to know about. Children need to be kids, in their own environment with their own families!
Just a sec, you saw graphic and pornographic books in a school library? And you did nothing? I’m astonished. I’d be in the librarian’s office pronto asking for these books to be removed. No pornography in school, please.
But… there is a problem, isn’t there? Who defines porn? To me it could be a beautiful painting of an Old Master, to you it may be smut. How do we reconcile that?
Of course, we have these highly trained librarians who make selections. And they do have the best interest of the kids on their minds - so not much can slip by them. Should not we trust them?
You obviously did not pay one iota of attention to what Smith said .The school board took it upon themselves to ban the other books as a statement of defiance rather than just agreeing to removing the material the parents identified and Smith showed in the video .Religion is not right or left ideology there are conservative positions and very left positions within the framework of the church ie anti abortion and pro immigration can coexist but nowhere in any Christian religion is the grooming of children to become sex objects or exposed to porn acceptable on any level .
Religion is not right or left ideology? Please, read a little about the history of churches and with whom the churches identify. You may be surprised. You may even revise your thinking.
Grooming of children for sexual purposes may not be an official church policy but, look at the last twenty years of jurisprudence and see how much various churches had to pay to people sexually abused by clergy. I haven’t seen many better organized mafias than Catholic Church in this respect.
And I will repeat again what should be patently obvious: the illustrious minister set the criteria for the book removal. School Board obliged. Minister finished with an egg in his face. Can’t blame the School Board.
By the way, it may be enlightening to find the short story Margaret Atwood wrote as the commentary to banning of Handmaid’s Tale. You may be amused. Or very upset. But that wouldn’t by Atwood’s fault.
I’m not sure which set of clowns you are referencing but that’s the nature of democracy. You vote as you think is right. Even if you elect clowns. Hey, it may get much worse. You may elect a person with no morals, no intellect, no knowledge of the world but with orange face.
I’m sorry to find out that you are not very fond of Ms Atwood. I think her books are not supposed to be entertaining. Rather thought provoking.
But I do believe that including a laureate of Governor Generals award in the list of banned books was a very classy touch by the Board. Shows clearly stupidly of book bans.
It’s hilarious that you’re so naïve as to somehow believe that the sexually explicit books that are the actual reason for this ministerial directive—not actual literature like 1984—weren’t picked for political purposes.
I’m just curious which of the books selected by the School Board (based on criteria set by Minister of Education) you find pornographic? Great Gatsby? Handmaids Tale? 1984?
Please note that books are in the library, staffed by trained personnel. Any kid with a cell phone is able to access yummy real porn any time of the day or night completely unsupervised.
One of the books, Gender Queer, that prompted the government action is recommended for grades 10 and above. However it was found in both public and catholic schools in K to 9 schools. If I were to post some of the pictures in it on social media I would probably have my account banned. Certain teachers are capitalizing on this and referring to it as a book ban when in fact they need to be more cognizant of what material is age appropriate.
acknowledging and not discriminating against lgbtq doesn't mean it should be promoted and advertised.
we need people (ie kids) to have a future. we need exports (ie cars, steel, pipelines, agriculture, etc) to have wealth. We need basics like food/shelter/security/jobs/health-care for our citizens. These things start at home and in school. the government needs to promote activities that make our country stronger.
in my opinion these books are age inappropriate and don't promote the societal values we need to succeed and have no place in public school. parents can buy them for their kids if they want or the kids can buy them when they are adults.
How incredible that those claiming to be on the side of intelligence and culture are the ones apparently unable to distinguish between soft-core pornography that propagates sexual degeneracy and literature like 1984, A Handmaid’s Tale and To Kill a Mockingbird.
1. “Gender Queer: A Memoir” by Maia Kobabe. This bestselling 2019 autobiography in graphic novel format has been praised for its honest, open discussion of what it’s like to be a nonbinary person. It also has been attacked for its frank depiction of sexual behavior, as Times columnist Robin Abcarian wrote in 2022. The debut book by a Santa Rosa illustrator, “Gender Queer” has become the most banned book in America, a target of school boards, conservative candidates, preachers and parental groups who condemned it as pornography aimed at impressionable children. (56 bans; 150 challenges, according to the ALA)
That you can type this out without seeing the obvious reasons why this book doesn’t belong in a public school library could hardly be better evidence of the depths of your adherence to liberal dogma. This is a very controversial, thoroughly political, sexually explicit book that no one in their right mind would
think is appropriate for a public school library given how many parents would be horrified to find out if it were. There is nothing more corrosive to public support for public schools then having books like this in their libraries. Anyone who supports public education should be demanding that these kind of books never be allowed in them.
Corrosive? The lack of critical thinking skills evidenced in today’s society has allowed cult like adherence to misinformation and lies spread by the Trumps, PP’s and Danielle Smiths of the world.
If you’re scared of books in schools, maybe it’s your parenting skills & relationship with your child that needs work?
You sound like a white Christian nationalist trying to control what everyone else does using fear tactics.
Grow up and self-reflect why this book is triggering you so much.
Isn’t it? That is exactly what nazi Germany did first. Banned books. Destroyed “inappropriate “ art. Killed people who did fit the ideal picture. We know how it ended.
yeah, it's just like nazi germany. before you know it they'll be bussing the kids into furnaces.
you know kids can't drive? they can't vote. can't buy alcohol, tobacco, or firearms? can't consent to sex with an adult. what an oppressive society we live in... honestly, unborn children can be aborted by their mother. kids from conception to adulthood have limited rights. music is rated as mature, movies, etc as well. they aren't entitled to read anything they want.
even adults aren't allowed to just do whatever they want. it doesn't make us nazi germany. it makes us a society.
Shocking how dumb most of the journalists asking Premier Smith questions in the clip sound (Western Standard reporter calls the situation a”thing” and says “like” about 3 times). How don’t they understand what the government sought to do and now what the Board has done. Government said not sexual imagery and noted 4 books that they considered inappropriate for elementary schools because of their imagery and these images would definitely not get printed in a newspaper. School board now has created a list of 200 books they’re going to pull. Seriously how easily duped are they? And calling it a book ban when it is literally just saying sexual imagery shouldn’t be in elementary school libraries is crazy. I bet many schools outside of Alberta went and checked to see if they had those books on their shelves because honestly how did someone think that was ok for elementary schools to have books with these images on their shelves?
The government is using this as a political stunt so why is a political stunt in return unwarranted? The wording of the ministerial order is vague and the consequence of shoddy policy is more books could be included based on the vague language. Even if the ministry was targeting specific books, if the wording could include other books, it's worth demonstrating what other books it includes.
That’s called an ad hominem, a logical fallacy, showing that rather than offer a counter argument, which you’re obviously incapable of doing, you attack the person making the argument. The person lacking the critical thinking skills is you and other liberal ideologues who all fall into line behind whatever absurdities pushed by progressive zealots, like supporting sexually explicit books in public school libraries.
Your reading skills need improvement as much as your critical thinking skills do. I didn’t call you names, as you did Lilley. Rather, I described, I think accurately, what you are based on what you’ve written: a liberal ideologue, who can’t or refuses to see the obvious problem with sexually explicit material in public school libraries. That’s not an ad hominem. Moreover, that you would call me a Christian Nationalist, which I am not, based on no evidence is yet further evidence of your use of name calling to make up for your apparent inability to make rational arguments based on evidence.
Ooh wow you guessed my skin colour, good for you! Nothing like bringing race into a completely unrelated convo 😂
And yes, I know “which ones” - same ones they’ve been pushing in B.C. (and seemingly the rest of North America) the last few years, along with transgenderism and drag queen story hour. The unnecessary sexualizing of school children who are barely learning the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic.
Which ones? What are the titles of the books you seem to know so much about?
I doubt you’ve seen them or know what they are called.
I guessed White Christian Nationalist because that’s what you sound like, the type who endorses its principles of racism, misogyny, white entitlement, intolerance, religious zealotry, pedophilia, greed and hypocrisy.
Not all that for removing pornagraphic comic books from Elementary School are white...many people around the world here in Alberta that immigrants don't want these images shown to their children! Its immoral, unconscionable and disgusting to allow children to have access to these books showing graphic scenes in a school!!! Yes there is the internet but parents know how to restrict the access to these special sites! People like you defending allowing these books are what is wrong with society!!!!
Parents were asking for help. The perverted school board should be all fired. There is no comparison between a novel and a comic book. Premier Smith is right and the school board are being immature with their response

People know exactly what happened. The School Board is defending gay porn in school libraries. Danielle Smith is opposed.
1984 is gay porn? Great Gatsby is gay porn? Handmaid’s Tale is porn? Perhaps you need to re-read these books.
Andrezej. Why are you defending gay porn? Obviously the School Board wasn’t taking out 1984 trying to comply with the rules. They were trying to obscure the porn they had allowed in.

This argument that "kids will see porn anyway" would be an argument for putting cigarette machines in school hallways. It's completely idiotic.
Fire 🔥 them all!
I feel sorry for Smith. She is trying to do the right thing by our children. She is protecting them from pornography but the leftist agenda is so strong in education that they don’t care about what is appropriate for children.
Don’t feel sorry for Smith. Feel sorry for yourself. You got played like a fiddle. And you don’t even know it.
Actually you sound like the strings on the fiddle...

Hmmm…. That’s all you can think of in response? Sad.
🙏🏼
It seems you didn’t bother to read the entire Substack nor watch the video. But thanks for showing up and making a fool of yourself 🙏🏻
Of course I did not bother to inhale everything. Some comments are not really that interesting, I’m afraid.
I’m not sure which set of clowns you are referencing but that’s the nature of democracy. You vote as you think is right. Even if you elect clowns. Hey, it may get much worse. You may elect a person with no morals, no intellect, no knowledge of the world but with orange face.

Sorry Andrzej my thought process and yours are on 2 different paths . I’m out .Good day .
No problem. We are allowed to think differently. Have a good night.
Maybe time for this school board to go
And maybe it is high time to make use of the brain? Replacing responsible people with ones picked for political purposes is never a good idea.
Responsible for what? Destruction of your children's minds is what!
It’s hilarious that you’re so naïve as to somehow believe that the sexually explicit books that are the actual reason for this ministerial directive—not actual literature like 1984—weren’t picked for political purposes.
Well, if it fits Ministerial criterion - it has to be purged, right?
100% agree with Danielle Smith on this. No pornographic books in schools.
I’m just curious which of the books selected by the School Board (based on criteria set by Minister of Education) you find pornographic? Great Gatsby? Handmaids Tale? 1984?

Actually, what you mentioned does not make us society. Culture, social engagement, sharing values, traditions - that makes us society.
You listed a set of rules that for the better or worse we need to follow. Rules do not make society.
Trust a lefty like you to call nazi when your losing the argument. Go back to your woke classes and become more dense.
You are a waste of time. Have a nice life.
Shocking how dumb most of the journalists asking Premier Smith questions in the clip sound (Western Standard reporter calls the situation a”thing” and says “like” about 3 times). The Edmonton School Board is packed with liars. If people keep voting them in, however, there is not a lot that can be done about it.

It’s fine yes they are wrong for listening to the province. She needs to step down
She is totally correct! If you don’t agree, you are part of the problem. We will not need your help to rebuild Canada. 🇨🇦
Brian Lilley is a like a Fox “News” hack, but working for American ideologues in Canada.
You maple magats, who lack critical thinking skills, are his targets.
Were you born dumb, or did you have an accident that caused you brain damage?
Typical immature maple magat behaviour… when you have no facts to counter with, resort to derogatory name calling.
Class act Dennis, your family must be so proud. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
That is your response?? lol. Look at your comment. Dennis is correct. You can’t remember what you wrote five minutes ago. You are deflecting.
That’s called an ad hominem, a logical fallacy, showing that rather than offer a counter argument, which you’re obviously incapable of doing, you attack the person making the argument. The person lacking the critical thinking skills is you and other liberal ideologues who all fall into line behind whatever absurdities pushed by progressive zealots, like supporting sexually explicit books in public school libraries.
lol, isn’t that what you just did to me?
The hypocrisy of the White Christian National right is topped only by their self-righteousness.
Just a garden variety hypocrite I guess.
Pointless opinion. What do you think of these graphic novels that depict explicit sexual
activity being available to elementary school children?
Which ones?
Do you even know what books are being considered, or are you clutching your pearls with the requisite White Christian Nationalist outrage?
