Parents were asking for help. The perverted school board should be all fired. There is no comparison between a novel and a comic book. Premier Smith is right and the school board are being immature with their response
If anybody should be fired it is the Education Minister. You know, actions have consequences. You screwed up - you need to apologize and go away.
When you set stupid criteria you get appropriate response. Alberta will have the great distinction to ban books by our best authors, likeMargaret Atwood. And we became laughing stock for the rest of the country as real country bumpkins.
Andrezej. Why are you defending gay porn? Obviously the School Board wasn’t taking out 1984 trying to comply with the rules. They were trying to obscure the porn they had allowed in.
I’m not defending anybody. I’m defending access to literature. The Minister set up criteria and the Board followed with titles matching his criteria.
In case you haven’t notice sex is a fairly important part of life. Like food. Like sleep.
Because it is important, we talk about, describe it in books. It is a part of great literature.
Books I mentioned don’t promote anything. They describe lives and, yes, there is some marginal sex in them. But don’t confuse content of these books with content of services like Pornhub. (By the way, porn services - including gay ones are just a click away on kids smartphones. Much more available than library books, don’t you think?)
Make no mistake, this is not about protecting minors from bad influences, this is about control of the population. And do you really think the elected official has more knowledge about what books a school library should have that trained professionals (with advanced degrees in this field) have?
You make no sense. This was not a complaint about wording of a law. None of those books were to be removed and you know it. You want gay sex graphic novels available for children. We who have kids and grandchildren don’t.
If you think ppl from Alberta will be seen as “country bumpkins” because of what your premier is overseeing here, well I think you are wrong. We live here in Central Canada, Ottawa to be exact, with family in Montreal, Toronto, Atlantic Canada and throughout the USA. You are not a “country bumpkin for standing up for decency. Nor are you that for taking what appears as appropriate action with some of these books in elementary level libraries. It is a matter of decency. So you need not denigrate yourself.
Well, judging from articles about Alberta even in international media it is too late for damage control. Yes, we are seen as country bumpkins.
By the way, if you think, dear reverend, that this ban has anything to do with decency - you are quite naïve. Think back, way back. Or, enter “history of book banning”into your favourite search engine. I will be very disappointed if the results surprise you.
I couldn’t care less how the world views me. Do you think country bumpkin is the sort of insult where anyone would think ‘ooh I had better change my ways!’
I feel sorry for Smith. She is trying to do the right thing by our children. She is protecting them from pornography but the leftist agenda is so strong in education that they don’t care about what is appropriate for children.
It’s hilarious that you’re so naïve as to somehow believe that the sexually explicit books that are the actual reason for this ministerial directive—not actual literature like 1984—weren’t picked for political purposes.
I’m just curious which of the books selected by the School Board (based on criteria set by Minister of Education) you find pornographic? Great Gatsby? Handmaids Tale? 1984?
Please note that books are in the library, staffed by trained personnel. Any kid with a cell phone is able to access yummy real porn any time of the day or night completely unsupervised.
One of the books, Gender Queer, that prompted the government action is recommended for grades 10 and above. However it was found in both public and catholic schools in K to 9 schools. If I were to post some of the pictures in it on social media I would probably have my account banned. Certain teachers are capitalizing on this and referring to it as a book ban when in fact they need to be more cognizant of what material is age appropriate.
acknowledging and not discriminating against lgbtq doesn't mean it should be promoted and advertised.
we need people (ie kids) to have a future. we need exports (ie cars, steel, pipelines, agriculture, etc) to have wealth. We need basics like food/shelter/security/jobs/health-care for our citizens. These things start at home and in school. the government needs to promote activities that make our country stronger.
in my opinion these books are age inappropriate and don't promote the societal values we need to succeed and have no place in public school. parents can buy them for their kids if they want or the kids can buy them when they are adults.
How incredible that those claiming to be on the side of intelligence and culture are the ones apparently unable to distinguish between soft-core pornography that propagates sexual degeneracy and literature like 1984, A Handmaid’s Tale and To Kill a Mockingbird.
1. “Gender Queer: A Memoir” by Maia Kobabe. This bestselling 2019 autobiography in graphic novel format has been praised for its honest, open discussion of what it’s like to be a nonbinary person. It also has been attacked for its frank depiction of sexual behavior, as Times columnist Robin Abcarian wrote in 2022. The debut book by a Santa Rosa illustrator, “Gender Queer” has become the most banned book in America, a target of school boards, conservative candidates, preachers and parental groups who condemned it as pornography aimed at impressionable children. (56 bans; 150 challenges, according to the ALA)
That you can type this out without seeing the obvious reasons why this book doesn’t belong in a public school library could hardly be better evidence of the depths of your adherence to liberal dogma. This is a very controversial, thoroughly political, sexually explicit book that no one in their right mind would
think is appropriate for a public school library given how many parents would be horrified to find out if it were. There is nothing more corrosive to public support for public schools then having books like this in their libraries. Anyone who supports public education should be demanding that these kind of books never be allowed in them.
Corrosive? The lack of critical thinking skills evidenced in today’s society has allowed cult like adherence to misinformation and lies spread by the Trumps, PP’s and Danielle Smiths of the world.
If you’re scared of books in schools, maybe it’s your parenting skills & relationship with your child that needs work?
You sound like a white Christian nationalist trying to control what everyone else does using fear tactics.
Grow up and self-reflect why this book is triggering you so much.
Isn’t it? That is exactly what nazi Germany did first. Banned books. Destroyed “inappropriate “ art. Killed people who did fit the ideal picture. We know how it ended.
yeah, it's just like nazi germany. before you know it they'll be bussing the kids into furnaces.
you know kids can't drive? they can't vote. can't buy alcohol, tobacco, or firearms? can't consent to sex with an adult. what an oppressive society we live in... honestly, unborn children can be aborted by their mother. kids from conception to adulthood have limited rights. music is rated as mature, movies, etc as well. they aren't entitled to read anything they want.
even adults aren't allowed to just do whatever they want. it doesn't make us nazi germany. it makes us a society.
Shocking how dumb most of the journalists asking Premier Smith questions in the clip sound (Western Standard reporter calls the situation a”thing” and says “like” about 3 times). How don’t they understand what the government sought to do and now what the Board has done. Government said not sexual imagery and noted 4 books that they considered inappropriate for elementary schools because of their imagery and these images would definitely not get printed in a newspaper. School board now has created a list of 200 books they’re going to pull. Seriously how easily duped are they? And calling it a book ban when it is literally just saying sexual imagery shouldn’t be in elementary school libraries is crazy. I bet many schools outside of Alberta went and checked to see if they had those books on their shelves because honestly how did someone think that was ok for elementary schools to have books with these images on their shelves?
The government is using this as a political stunt so why is a political stunt in return unwarranted? The wording of the ministerial order is vague and the consequence of shoddy policy is more books could be included based on the vague language. Even if the ministry was targeting specific books, if the wording could include other books, it's worth demonstrating what other books it includes.
THE "PEDO CLUBS" WILL TRY VERY HARD TO KEEP SEXUALLY EXPLICIT COMIC-STYLE "SNEAK A PEEK" AT IMMATURE CHILDREN'S NAKEDNESS...NOT TO TEACH THEM, BUT TO MAKE THIS ACTIVITY APPEAR TO BE "NORMAL". THIS WILL ONLY ENCOURAGE ADULT PEDOPHILES THAT MAY HAVE ACCESS TO OUR CHILDREN IN THE SCHOOLS, TO ILLEGALLY SEXUALLY GROOM CHILDREN WHILE THEIR PARENTS ARE AT WORK.
The school boards themselves are a product of our pathetic education system, so why would anyone be surprised they cannot understand simple instructions on what is appropriate for elementary reading.
as wonderful as it is for the Premier to "come out swinging" against the clowns on the Edmonton Board, perhaps she might spend her time on more important things like STOPPING a digital ID instead of selling us into slavery.
this book thing is a welcome distraction for the Premier to us to keep us focused on something else while she does her bait and switch
Parents were asking for help. The perverted school board should be all fired. There is no comparison between a novel and a comic book. Premier Smith is right and the school board are being immature with their response

People know exactly what happened. The School Board is defending gay porn in school libraries. Danielle Smith is opposed.
1984 is gay porn? Great Gatsby is gay porn? Handmaid’s Tale is porn? Perhaps you need to re-read these books.
Andrezej. Why are you defending gay porn? Obviously the School Board wasn’t taking out 1984 trying to comply with the rules. They were trying to obscure the porn they had allowed in.

This argument that "kids will see porn anyway" would be an argument for putting cigarette machines in school hallways. It's completely idiotic.
You are entitled to your subjective opinion dear Andrzej
Fire 🔥 them all!
I feel sorry for Smith. She is trying to do the right thing by our children. She is protecting them from pornography but the leftist agenda is so strong in education that they don’t care about what is appropriate for children.
Don’t feel sorry for Smith. Feel sorry for yourself. You got played like a fiddle. And you don’t even know it.
Actually you sound like the strings on the fiddle...
Maybe time for this school board to go
And maybe it is high time to make use of the brain? Replacing responsible people with ones picked for political purposes is never a good idea.
It’s hilarious that you’re so naïve as to somehow believe that the sexually explicit books that are the actual reason for this ministerial directive—not actual literature like 1984—weren’t picked for political purposes.
Responsible for what? Destruction of your children's minds is what!
Well, if it fits Ministerial criterion - it has to be purged, right?
100% agree with Danielle Smith on this. No pornographic books in schools.
I’m just curious which of the books selected by the School Board (based on criteria set by Minister of Education) you find pornographic? Great Gatsby? Handmaids Tale? 1984?

Disgusting.

They aren’t banning books. School libraries make choices as to what to put on their shelves. That isn’t banning.

Actually, what you mentioned does not make us society. Culture, social engagement, sharing values, traditions - that makes us society.
You listed a set of rules that for the better or worse we need to follow. Rules do not make society.
Trust a lefty like you to call nazi when your losing the argument. Go back to your woke classes and become more dense.
You are a waste of time. Have a nice life.

The Edmonton School Board is packed with liars. If people keep voting them in, however, there is not a lot that can be done about it.
