CBC suddenly loves Canada's history, colonization and the monarchy
Amazing how they have changed their tune, some might think it's to help the Liberal government.

By now you’ve surely heard that King Charles III has arrived in Canada. My Toronto Sun colleague Bryan Passifiume has not only done a nice write up of their arrival, he snapped several great photos of it, so do check that out.
Passifiume is a great writer in Ottawa covering the Hill, he can’t spell his first name correctly, everyone knows it’s Brian, but other than that, he’s a great guy. Give him a follow on X if you use that platform.
It was fascinating to watch CBC on Monday and see the organization that has spent years denouncing Canada’s history and describing us as colonial oppressors suddenly spend all day gushing over the monarchy. I have no problem with Canadians being excited at King Charles and Camilla being here, looking forward to him reading the speech from the Throne, but I’m not CBC.
As I pointed out in a blog post, these guys have spent years beating up on Canada’s history, Canada’s identity and calling for decolonization. Is there anything that screams colonization more than gushing over a King who lives in a foreign land?
Give the short post a read and then read this piece in National Post on how the Governor General Mary Simon doesn’t understand her role and undermined the King’s visit to Canada.
King Charles will read the Speech from the Throne at around 11 am Tuesday and outline the government’s priorities. Given that it is the King reading it, this will be a less political speech than we are used to and frankly, I am good with that.
Are our elections legitimate?
American politics always spills over into Canadian politics and the idea that the most recent federal election was stolen has gained traction with some people. I spent Monday afternoon writing about some very real problems with Elections Canada and the recounts.
I encourage you to read the column, hey, why not share it on social media or email it to your Aunt May in Whitby or wherever your relatives live.
That said, I don’t see this election as stolen, not at the ballot box. Maybe Mark Carney sold Canadians a pig in a poke with his “elbows up” rhetoric, but it wasn’t stolen.
In Canada, elections are run by non-partisan officials. Trust me, they are very boring people. This differs from the United States where they have electronic voting, bizarre voting machines, and elections run by the party in power locally, those are all things we don’t have here.
I have issues with the weird recounts, but paper ballots counted by people, with recounts overseen by all parties, is the gold standard. Which is exactly how we do it in Canada.

Sticking briefly with antisemitism…
I wrote yesterday about taking part in the Walk With Israel on Sunday. Well, on Monday the latest episode of the Full Comment Podcast dropped.
Did you know that I hosted a podcast? It’s one of the top political podcasts in Canada.
Sadly, we were talking antisemitism.
I spoke with Brendan O’Neill a brilliant British writer, Irish really, who has written extensively on the topic. We discussed whether Western liberal democracies could survive without confronting the rot we see in our streets with pro-Hamas folks marching.
We recorded before the double murder of two Israeli diplomats in Washington last week and so while it isn’t part of the discussion, I wisely listened to Executive Producer Kevin Libin and recorded a new intro to the podcast.
Listen here.
What to read today...
I made sure to only use three dots today, because yesterday I was at the business end of a comment from my wife that you can’t use four dots and everyone knows that. I’ll use five if I want to, but to keep peace at home, I’ll stick to three dots.
Jerry Agar is arguing that we should move to once-a-week home mail delivery as Canada Post struggles. Does anyone remember that Justin Trudeau promised a return to direct home delivery for everyone, no more community mailboxes, in the 2015 election? How is that working out for you?
Lorne Gunter has a great piece on how out of touch federal bureaucrats are. As a former Ottawa resident, this never gets old because it is true.
Joe Warmington did a follow up piece on how there was a guy spotted on the pro-Hamas side wearing what looked like a real grenade. Meanwhile, Warren Kinsella wrote on how antisemitism these days comes from left-wing extremism.
That’s it for now, thanks for reading this inaugural newsletter. If you aren’t subscribed yet, please make sure you sign-up, it is free and please, share this with your friends.
