I think we would be wise to be part of a military alliance with the us and Greenland because we need protection from china and Russia too. That said, I hope it’s not too late to root that red dragon out of the many layers of Canadian power it’s squirmed its way into. I hope the us wont let us, for their own sake, become any further entrenched. But apart from a change of government in Ottawa we are in great danger.

Commenting on "The Dub" here.

Well, i am old enough that my boyfriend and I were going to the Dub in the 60's. And it used to be my favorite. Sadly, the Dub nearest to us has now hit close to rock bottom. And yes, i am sorry to say: foreign workers. It's possibly also owned by "new canadians". Here's the problem, import foreign people and they bring their business style with them. So now...the place reeks of rancid oil that has been used over and over. The burgers do not taste like real meat. The fries are limp and greasy. My most favorite of all time: the teenburger....nope. I would not stop at any Dub, anymore. Even the root beer tastes watered down. And it's a shame. It really is.

I would add here: same with "harveys"...same exact problem.

The TFW program is a scam from top to bottom: franchise owners are largely from India or are of Indian background; they recruit solely from India; usually have an interest in or own an immigration 'consultant'/headhunting firm here or there. Prospective employees pay these firms exorbitant fees/bonds to secure employment and thus get a foothold into Canada/head start on the PR track. Sometimes they are promised a return of some or all of these 'bonds'; or they pay them off through payroll deductions. They get all the 'free' health care, etc plus as mentioned before, a leg up on their PR status. Franchise owners make a fortune on these fees. They can also extort their employees by threatening to withdraw their sponsorship/status. It's a bad deal all around for everyone except the franchise owners and immigration consultants. But especially, for tax paying Canadians.

good point. and from what i understand, if a company hires a foreign worker, the govt picks up 60% of their pay..so what a bonus for the employer, eh? and how does that help young canadians trying to land an entry-level job?

This applies not just to A&W, but to Tim Horton's, various pizza franchises, gas stations, 'help' call centres, etc. And it explains why no locals (including youth) can get jobs there: you can't charge locals a $20-70K immigration consultant/finders fee, nor hold their passports. You can't threaten to withdraw your FTW sponsorship of them and hence their status here in Canada, or threaten their families in the old country if the employee somehow falls short of their commitment.

The 'dub' in smaller centre's in Alberta is still pretty great. I remember the '60's dub though. They had corn fritters, and I still miss them. Teenage memories.

julia payne's avatar

Completely forgot about that! But i do remember that no trip to Jasper was without a stop at the Dub in Edson

Hey, on the A&W owners in Sept-Îles and Baie-Comeau pushing for more temporary foreign workers, the numbers add some context. StatsCan's November labour survey has unemployment in Côte-Nord at 3.9%, below Quebec's 4.9%. Locals might be available, but if they're refusing entry-level spots at minimum wage, the fix could be better pay rather than more TFWs. The program's meant for real shortages, not cost-cutting.

Wiseman is another former banker from a firm that was smack in the middle of the 08/09 crash. Like GS. What could possibly go wrong.

I don’t go to these restaurants with all imported foreigners, Tim Hortons, Ronnie McRottens, Albert and Walter can go get bent and stuffed!

If we don’t patronize these Corporations that seek to increase their profits by destroying Canadian taxpayers health care systems, housing them they will not need more foreign temp labour will they?

A&W was the last fast food place I went to. The food quality has deteriorated, shrunk, and increased in price, not to mention all foreigners working with lack of English.

Our town is fortunate to have a family run bistro that offers fresh food for comparative cost, and outstanding quality. Family is pleasant and hard working, and speak English. No govt handouts, just hard working Canadians!

The "Dub" is like many other places where the franchise is foreign owned and family visas are likely being paid for by the business. I see these stores often nothing more than a self perpetuating purchase of a job for the owner.

Your AW comments are spot on as a go to quality road trip stop but at their prices they can afford full wages!

Carney trying to recruit a majority is a long term mistaken strategy. Ma is now dispised by his riding and potentially a CCO plant.

He is really setting himself up for a big failure of over promising and never delivering at the street level.

I would be interested in your assessment of Trumps declining health, the fall of US as a rule of law democracy based on humanitarian values and its impact on Canada.

Similarly maybe Canada should take over Greenland as part of our Artic. We have closer links than Denmark

Canad doesn't have a military force capable of taking over anything , let alone another country!!

So Brian, with all the backlash Ma is getting fron his constituents, wouldn't that scare off further CPC crossings.?

Depends on what is on offer.

The current volley of immigrants haven't contributed. That's it that's all.

One aspect of the TFW program is that is a form of indentured servitude. It's my understanding that any of the workers brought in to fill a position at one of these locations is tied to that business, and can't leave to work anywhere else (like a Canadian citizen could). That is the first thing I don't like about the program. The second is that, if the business can't find a Canadian citizen, it is probably because they won't pay a competitive wage and/or treat the employees poorly. IMHO, the program should be scrapped.

Perhaps Mr. Lilley, since you have a very large audience, you could discuss how removing the hidden Federal Manufacturing Tax (1991) reduced production costs and increased trade volumes, and compare that to the industrial carbon tax, increased regulatory burdens, and CFS = all things that reduce investment, decrease manufacturing & productivity, and make us less competititve on the domestic and global market for Canadian Made goods. People seem to be under the impression that 'hidden" taxes don't cost them anything.

Wiseman's was a co-founder, with Dominic Barton, of the Century Initiative and is the current CoB. Good way to show the States we are concerned about shipping them immigrant criminals.

Well Brian, not only Canada shows you don’t have to have one qualification, other than being friends, or loyal, or corrupt to be a member of both Canada and the US. Pretty soon robots will be all that runs our country and many say, when I joke about that, could they be any worse than what we have had the last eleven years?
