After showing strength, Mark Carney caves and shows weakness on Iran and who owns Vancouver...
Plus Pierre Poilievre goes to London.
Does Mark Carney even know where he stands on the strikes against Iran anymore?
The PM’s strong and morally right statement on Saturday was the right one. It is now being undermined by his MPs and by himself.
“Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security,” Carney said on the weekend.
As I was writing in the Toronto Sun, Liberal MPs like Will Greaves began to undermine Carney with his video denouncing the attacks. Let me be clear, and I was in the column for the Sun, you cannot denounce the American and Israeli attacks on Iran as illegal without also dealing with decades of illegal actions by the Iranian regime.
That is what MPs Greaves and too many on the political left are trying to do, invoke international law to denounce the American-Israeli actions but not denounce the decades of illegal actions by the Iranian regime.
That was bad enough, but hours later Carney was backtracking on his own support.
These are not the actions of a leader, they are the actions of a follower which Carney appears to be showing himself as. If he were a true leader he would bring his party along.
Instead, a a news conference in Australia, he did everything he could to walk away from the statement he made over the weekend.
I’ll have more to say on this Wednesday morning, but this is part of a pattern for Carney.
Polling from the Angus Reid Institute shows that most Liberals oppose striking against Iran. Most disappointingly, most Canadian women think it is a bad idea to strike a regime that viciously oppressed women.
A real leader would have stood their ground and in 10 days the Liberal polling would have changed.
Getting some clarity on who owns land in Vancouver…
The Carney government is scrambling to make sure everyone knows that their deal with the Musqueam Indian Band doesn’t mean home or land ownership is under threat or will change. Based on the language in the full official document, which I obtained, I’m not sure that I believe their claim that nothing will change.
The language is vague at best, open to interpretation and as I write in my column, given our courts, I’d be nervous if I were a B.C. home owner.
Using the terms right and title has a very specific legal definition in Canadian law, it means ownership. As I detailed in my Toronto Sun column this afternoon, the news release used that language more than once and the language used in the document are very concerning.
Saying someone has rights and title to land in Canadian common law infers ownership. These documents infer ownership of much of Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond and Delta.
The document is far more detailed in defining the land that makes up Musqueam territory than they do defining what rights and title mean.
Which means, the plain definition will take effect if and when this is challenged.

Pierre Poilievre delivers the Margaret Thatcher lecture in London…
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is in London, England and was delivering the Margaret Thatcher Lecture to the Centre for Policy Studies.
Check out the story from my colleague Spiro Papuckoski in the Sun.
“Now more than ever, Canada must begin to trade, deeper ties with places like the United Kingdom. One way is through free trade with old friends, strengthen the bonds that we have between us,” he said.
“For generations, Canadians and Brits traded, invested, and fought on the same side of wars. The United Kingdom has long been one of Canada’s leading investment partners. And much is happening in the world today that needs to bind us together.”
My weekly update with Bridge City News….
Every Tuesday I chat with the folks at Bridge City News about the top stories in politics with a bit of an Alberta angle.

Carney is a coward. As are all these enlightened Liberals, especially the women. Shows how easy peasy life has become in the Western World. Meanwhile THIS Canadian fully supports ALL Persians in Iran and the full on strike against Sharia Law and the killing of the murderous Khameini and his henchman. Bless Israel and the US for having the chutzpah to correct the evil in the world.
Carney is a clown.
