A realistic assessment of Carney's first year shows a struggling economy...
As Carney said last year, we were weak before Trump, we can't just blame him.
With Mark Carney’s first year in office complete, there were no shortage of reviews and assessments over the weekend. The Toronto Star was supportive as expected, as was this column in The Globe and Mail while Maclean’s was quite positive.
It would be wrong to say that Carney’s first year was an abysmal failure, but it’s not a roaring success either. There are positive moves that he’s made and that should be applauded but especially on the economic front, Canada is struggling simply blaming Trump won’t cut it.
It would be tough to get him or his supporters, in the media and elsewhere, to admit this now, but Carney said last year that we couldn’t just blame Trump.
“Our economy was weak before we got to the point of these threats from President Trump,” Carney said during the debate to become Liberal Party leader and PM in February of last year.
It’s been weakening for years and as I’ll show with data, despite Carney’s rhetoric on things like jobs - which he’s now claiming we are doing better on than the Americans - we are getting weaker.
