A framework of a deal for Greenland, perhaps, but no details...
After a speech focused on Greenland, with a shot at Mark Carney, Donald Trump calls a truce.
Trump’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davis, Switzerland lasted more than an hour. It covered his first year in office, he said repeatedly that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the “rigged election” in 2020 and of course, Greenland.
“All we want from Denmark for national and international security and to keep our very energetic and dangerous potential enemies at bay, is this land on which we’re going to build the greatest golden dome ever built. We’re building a golden dome that’s going to, just by its very nature, going to be defending Canada,” Trump said before ranting about Canada being a freeloader.
More on the Canada part in a moment.
Trump returned to the theme of needing to own Greenland, not lease it, several times. He said it was stupid of the United States to give Greenland back to Denmark after the Americans had occupied it during the Second World War after the Germans invaded Denmark.
Yet, before the end of the day, Trump was announcing that he had a deal, or the framework of a deal on Greenland.
Trump was asked for details on the deal during an interview on CNBC and couldn’t really provide any at this point.
The Carney shot heard around the world…
It shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone that Trump didn’t like Mark Carney’s speech on Tuesday. Carney’s entire speech was a criticism of the United States under Donald Trump and his decision to walk away from the rules-based international order.
If you are going to take shots at another world leader, even veiled shots, they you need to be ready for return fire.
On Wednesday, Trump returned fire.
“Canada gets a lot of freebies from us. By the way, they should be grateful also, but they’re not. I watched your Prime Minister yesterday. He wasn’t so grateful. They should be grateful to us,” Trump said.
“Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that Mark the next time you make your statements.”
Those words have definitely has put a lot of Canadian noses out of joint.
As I said though, when you fire shots, expect return fire.
What this means for our relationship with Washington, the future of CUSMA is anyone’s guess. As I’ve been thinking for the last week or two though, I don’t think CUSMA survives.
Doug Ford joins other premiers in criticizing Carney’s gun program…
As I wrote in my column in the Sun on this issue, it’s getting easier to count who does support Mark Carney’s bad gun “buyback” program than those who don’t. Ontario Premier Doug Ford added his name to those saying that Carney’s gun control program misses the mark.
Impressive that Ford is doing this.
He’s not going as far as Danielle Smith or Scott Moe, but for middle of the road Ontario, it’s a bold move for Ford.
A taxpayer acknowledgement…
Toronto became famous recently in the United States and elsewhere for our ridiculous land acknowledgements read out before council and committee meetings.
Somehow, the internet picked up on Councillor Shelley Carroll doing a recent land acknowledgement. It was picked up on X and elsewhere by conservative leaning accounts and it was profiled in The Daily Mail.
“Let’s start the meeting in a good way by acknowledging first that the land we are meeting on is the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. And it is now home to many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples,” Carroll said.
“We also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit,’ Carroll said. ‘I’m also going to make our African ancestral acknowledgement, and that is that the city of Toronto acknowledges all treaty peoples, including those who came here as settlers, as migrants, either in this generation or generations past.”
“And those of us who came here involuntarily, particularly those brought to this land as a result of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and slavery. We pay tribute to those ancestors of African origin or descent.”
Well, Daniel Tate, the man behind Integrity TO, appeared at a committee meeting this week and brought his own acknowledgement - this one for taxpayers.
Check out the looks on the faces of Councillors Gord Perks and Chris Moise as Tate speaks.
Give Daniel a follow on X or Instagram if you are in the Toronto area.

I do like the taxpayer acknowledgement! Thank you for sharing it with us Brian.
Really ? The rubbish from
Carney at Davos playing to his fellow the elitist friends?
There is a profound distaste among Canadians for the WEF.
I didn’t share it because I regarded it as a country club of wannabe sycophants.
In fact Carneys speech is clear. Canadians mean nothing to him. We are just serfs, vassals to his “ new world order “.
It’s a diktat. Standing ovation from his fellow courtiers.
The fawning of MSM ( even the sun , read Eddie Chau tonight) illustrate just how far off the rails Carney has gone and how far the propaganda machine has evolved.
And of course among other things ? One trillion dollars in spending outside parliamentary process.
Oh and one more thing: no reduction in canola tarrifs from China.
Wait three months you say?
Sure.
